Injury Report: April 13

Is a top-5 pick nearing a return this week?

Welcome to the Injury Report! As the season continues, the injuries are starting to mount up! Let’s take a look at this week’s injury news.

Fernando Tatis Jr. – Shoulder Subluxation

Here we go! Fernando Tatis Jr. subluxed his shoulder on April 5. As bad as the video looked, the Padres are reporting that Tatis could return by April 16. Do I think this could happen? It is possible. Do I think it’s a good idea? I don’t. If Tatis has another subluxation, he will likely miss the rest of the season and need to undergo surgery. This is an unfortunate situation for Tatis and fantasy owners all the way around. If you could trade him for 75% of draft day value, I would make the move. If you could trade for him for 50% of draft day value, I would. Suppose you have him and want to hold him; also a good move. I will be watching Tatis very closely when he returns. But I don’t think this will end well.

Return Date: Mid-April

Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy, sell, and hold?

Ketel Marte – Hamstring Strain

The Diamondbacks are very hush-hush about Ketel Marte and his hamstring. After watching the video and the lack of news lately, I’m starting to think that he might be dealing with a severe grade II strain. What does this mean for his fantasy and 2021 outlook? This is a murky outlook, but I’m thinking that Marte is looking at a 6+ week absence.

Return Date: Early/Mid-June

Buy/Sell/Hold: Hold could very quickly become a sell.

Josh Donaldson – Hamstring Strain

Josh Donaldson has ramped up his activity quicker than I thought he would. I will gladly admit I got his initial timeline wrong and will welcome him back into my lineup this upcoming week. The Twins are expecting to activate Donaldson on Tuesday, and we will see if that holds. I am still cautious about him returning so quickly. His risk for re-injury is high, so keep that in mind moving forward.

Return Date: This week

Buy/Sell/Hold: Hold

Zac Gallen – Stress Fracture

Zac Gallen will be returning from a forearm stress fracture on Tuesday. He has cleared all the hurdles needed to make his season debut. There is a slim risk that Gallen could experience a setback after a couple of starts, but that would surprise me.

Return Date: Tuesday

Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy

Tim Anderson – Hamstring Strain

Even though Tim Anderson landed on the IL, he is expected to be activated when first eligible on Thursday.

Return Date: Thursday

Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy

Anthony Rendon – Groin Strain

Anthony Rendon is going to be out for a short time because of a left groin strain. I’m not worried about this, and I would expect Rendon to be out for 10-14 days.

Return Date: Late April

Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy

Shohei Ohtani – Blister

Shohei Ohtani is expected to miss his next pitching start due to a blister. Ohtani does not have a history of blisters, and I’m not worried about him at all.

Return Date: Late this week/early next week.

Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy

Christian Yelich – Back Tightness

Another year, another Christian Yelich back tightness flare-up. This won’t be a long-term issue but could flare up again at some point this season, as we have seen in the past.

Return Date: Mid/late week.

Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy

Cody Bellinger – Calf Contusion

Cody Bellinger will be out for 10-14 days due to a calf contusion. I’m not worried about this, and he should be good to go once he is eligible off the IL.

Return Date: Late April

Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy

Man you scared the hell out of me when you wrote weeks instead of days for bellinger.

    • Jake Robinson says:

Yeah, not really sure what happened there! The article has been updated for days! Thanks for reading, Aaron.

  2. Dave says:

    Any news on Adrian Morejon?

    • Jake Robinson says:

Word on the street is forearm/elbow strain—a huge red flag for me. I wouldn’t want to own any shares of Morejon in a redraft league. Elbow strains are immediate drop/trade away candidates.

    What about Carrasco?

    • Jake Robinson says:

It sounds like he is ahead of schedule. I believe two weeks ago, on Nick’s weekly Reddit AMA, I put Cookie returning between 4-6 weeks. So we are looking at (based on my best estimation) 2-4 weeks. Hope this helps, thanks for reading!

  4. Mario says:

    Good stuff as always. Thanks!

Thank you so much for bringing back this column this year! Everything read like there was a chance he’ll come back after a minimum, and to hear actual information is nice.
