Injury Report 9/24: Every Player’s DL Situation

Steven Souza (OF, Arizona Diamondbacks) – Souza should be able to return in the first half of this week.

Breyvic Valera (2B, Baltimore Orioles) – Valera’s season is over.

Xander Bogaerts (SS, Boston Red Sox) – Bogaerts hurt his left shoulder on a swing and it didn’t look good at all. He won’t hit the DL due to where we are in the season, but considering this is a front shoulder injury incurred on a swing I’m not optimistic for him to have a strong offensive finish to the year (and the postseason). The Red Sox may choose to bench Bogaerts for most of this week to try to rest him as much as possible for the postseason.

Kris Bryant (3B, Chicago Cubs) – Bryant continues to battle some lingering shoulder issues and missed Sunday’s game because of them. He should return early this week but it wouldn’t be a shock to see him get another day or two off down the stretch.

Charlie Morton (SP, Houston Astros) – Shoulder discomfort put Morton on the DL earlier this year. Morton is confident he’ll make another start this season, but I’m not nearly as optimistic. I feel the Astros will try to rest him as much as possible heading into October and he may miss his originally slated start for late this week.

George Springer (OF, Houston Astros) – Springer got the day off due to some lingering issues. Nothing sounds major, so he should be back in the lineup soon.

Carlos Correa (SS, Houston Astros) – The back injury that has plagued Correa’s 2018 lingers on and has held Correa out since 9-18-18. The Astros will continue to rest in him hopes he can return to productivity in time for the postseason.

Andrelton Simmons (SS, Los Angeles Angels) – Simmons tumbled awkwardly, though this doesn’t appear to be a major injury. He should return at some point this week.

Jose Fernandez (1B, Los Angeles Angels) – X-Rays negative. We’ve discussed how sometimes an MRI or CT are required to diagnose a carpal fracture so he’s not out of the water yet, though it seems Fernandez will return at some point this year.

Jose Urena (SP, Miami Marlins) – Urena should be able to make his next scheduled start.

Logan Forsythe (2B, Minnesota Twins) – Forsythe will likely return at some point this week.

Miguel Sano (3B, Minnesota Twins) – With additional imaging coming this sounds like Sano’s season is over. I’d expect he gets the official shutdown in the next day or two.

Christian Yelich (OF, Milwaukee Brewers) – Yelich will be re-evaluated on Monday. To me, this looked to get him on the right tricep, perhaps striking the ulnar nerve as it passes posterior to the elbow. In general, I don’t believe a HBP in this area could cause anything too serious, but this is Yelich’s throwing arm and difficulty fielding his position may be the biggest barrier to him returning this week. Monitor for an update Monday, but he may be out into the latter half of this week if he’s unable to throw effectively.

Didi Gregorius (SS, New York Yankees) – This seems to a be R TFCC rupture. Didi received a cortisone shot which will help to combat pain and inflammation but will do little to address structural imbalance created by the TFCC injury. If torn completely, or enough to substantially affect the stability of the ulnar side of the wrist then Didi’s season is likely done. This injury to the right wrist of a right-handed thrower and left-handed batter is about as significant as possible as the right wrist is prone for a left-handed swing and TFCC injuries result in a direct reduction in wrist/hand strength in the prone position. The Yankees will give him 48 hours to react positively to the injection prior to making a decision.

Starling Marte (OF, Pittsburgh Pirates) – Calf injuries are very difficult to manage and it wouldn’t be a shock to see this tightness end Marte’s 2018 considering the Pirate’s are out of the postseason picture.

Joe Musgrove (SP, Pittsburgh Pirates) – This sounds like a complex injury. Musgrove is done for 2018 and may get a delayed start to the 2019 season.

Edgar Santana (RP, Pittsburgh Pirates) – Santana’s season is over. We are still waiting on MRI results, but he may undergo Tommy John if his UCL is compromised.

Francisco Cervelli (C, Pittsburgh Pirates) – Cervelli is dealing with a gastrointestinal issue. He should be able to return in the first half of this week.

Kolton Wong (2B, St. Louis Cardinals) – Wong seems to be a DTD decision with his lingering hamstring soreness.

Willy Adames (RP, Tampa Bay Rays) – Adames fell ill. He should be able to return in the first half of this week.

Kevin Kiermaier (OF, Tampa Bay Rays) – I’m more concerned with the shoulder injury than the back injury but either could keep Kiermaier out of the lineup for much of the remainder of the year. For now, they appear minor, but that could change pending further evaluation.

Adam Eaton (RP, Washington Nationals) – Eaton is battling soreness in his surgically repaired left knee. It may make sense to shut him down for the remainder of the 2018 season.
