The Hold Up 5/31: Ranking the Top 80 Relievers for Holds Every Thursday

Today we will take look at the updated non-closer reliever market as there are some changes to the list since our previous installment. Keep in mind, just because a player is ranked below another player (especially when in the same tier), that doesn’t mean you need to rush to drop them for a higher ranked player. These rankings are mostly to be used on a tier by tier scale and apply towards the pitcher’s value for the rest of the season.

  • A lot of movement near the top this week as we happened to see a lot of injuries and a lot of poor performances. Previous tier 1 relievers Carl Edwards Jr. Adam Ottavino and Andrew Miller were all placed on the DL which has severely shaken up the top 10. Other’s to leave the board due to injury include Nick Vincent and A.J. Ramos, while Brad Keller leaves the list now that he is a member of the Royals starting rotation.
  • The biggest movers towards the top of the board include Jordan Hicks, Amir Garrett, and Tony Cingrani. Hicks has seen a huge uptick in strikeouts over the past week as he has made a commitment to use his slider more often. This trend should continue going forward. Cingrani has looked great since returning from the DL and now has 5 holds over the past two weeks to go with 8 strikeouts and 4 hits/walks.  The weeks biggest fallers are A.J. Minter and Michael Feliz who have struggled to take advantage of their opportunities so far this season. Both still have the talent to move back up this list in no time if they are able to figure things out.
  • Five relievers picked up 3 holds this past week, Sam Dyson, Amir Garrett, Joe Kelly, Brandon Kintzler and Reyes Moronta. Moronta was an addition to the list this week, as he is having a fine season despite being down on the hold’s
