The Hold Up 5/17: Ranking the Top 80 Relievers for Holds Every Thursday

Rick Graham's weekly update of the relievers to own for Holds in 2018.

Today we will take look at the updated non-closer (committees included) reliever market as there are some changes to the list since our previous installment. Keep in mind, just because a player is ranked below another player (especially when in the same tier), that doesn’t mean you need to rush to drop them for a higher ranked player. These rankings are mostly to be used on a tier by tier scale and apply towards the pitcher’s value for the rest of the season.

  • Despite the talk of a committee in Atlanta, I think Arodys Vizcaino is still the guy going forward, with manager Brian Snitker just looking to spell him more often. It makes sense with how well Dan Winkler has been throwing as well as A.J. Minter’s ability to get lefties out. I didn’t include Edubray RamosJustin Anderson or Bruce Rondon as each actually earned a save this past week and those situations very well could be considered committees.
  • Others leaving the list this week are Luke Gregerson, Tony Cingrani, Tyler Lyons and Carson Smith, all for injury reasons. The Carson Smith injury is especially frustrating given how it happened and the amount of time he will miss but the other’s shouldn’t be out too long. Also look for Dominic Leone and Adam Morgan to return soon.
  • We had five relievers tied for the weekly lead in holds. Tommy Hunter, Jose Alvarado, Luis Garcia, Will Harris and Bryan Shaw all had 3 holds this past week, It’s good to see Shaw finally turning it around after a horrible start to the year, as he has put together a nice couple of weeks lately.

How is Ottavino’s worst placement 38? That’s absolutely crazy to me!

    • Rick Graham says:

He was pretty terrible last year and they added Shaw this winter. I wasn’t placing him in the top 30 before the season.

  2. Michael says:

Any concern about Edwards recent struggles? His last 3 outings have been atrocious.

    • Cameron Roth says:

Same question on Andrew Miller also, I’m worried. 3BB in an inning is unheard of for him.
