The Hold Up 4/1: Ranking the Top 90 Relievers for Holds Every Thursday

Rick Graham ranks baseball's top setup men for the 2021 season

Happy opening day everyone! I will keep this short since there’s a lot going on today and for the most part, I didn’t change much from last week’s list. There hasn’t been a whole lot of news to change things up over the past week anyway, and I want to see how things play out in the early going with some of the more risk/reward arms here.

Notes

  • David Price and not Dustin May will be in the Dodgers bullpen to begin the season and could figure into some hold opportunities. He has plenty of experience and success working out of the bullpen so it will be interesting to see how Dave Roberts uses him.
  • With Ryan Brasier beginning the year on the IL, Hirokazu Sawamura could be in line for a setup role early on in the season. It took some adjusting but Sawamura looked good over his last 3 appearances. He can get his fastball up to 97 and pairs it with a devastating splitter, which screams high leverage reliever.
  • Hopefully, the Padres find themselves in a save situation tonight so we can finally find out who their closer is going to be. The sense is that it will be Emilio Pagan which is why Mark Melancon is on this list and so low on this list. There are 5-6 relievers in that bullpen that when healthy just provide much more upside than Melancon.
