Every day of the 2022 baseball season, I’ll be looking at today and tomorrow’s slate of scheduled starting pitchers and ranking their matchups for your fantasy baseball streams.
There’s a lot that goes into this and you can hang out with me on Twitch.tv/pitcherlist to talk about the specific ranks as I make them every weekday morning from 9am – 11am ET. If you have questions about these ranks, please ask during the morning Twitch AMA. Those are my office hours as I generally don’t answer comments on the site.
There are four tiers to these rankings with 12-teamers in mind:
Auto-Start – Just do it. Don’t overthink this, start the man.
Probably Start – I’m likely starting these arms, though I recognize there is more risk than we’d like there to be. Either it’s a tough matchup for a good pitcher or a weak lineup for a volatile arm.
Questionable Start – There are situations where I’d take the chance, either with strong enough upside on the ability side, or a poor offense that a pitcher could take advantage of.
Do Not Start – The reward is not worth the risk. Don’t do it.
Obviously, there will be circumstances where pitchers should move between teams for your situation specifically and these new tiers should act as a little more help than the straight table from last year.
Please keep in mind that streaming is far from a perfect play. In fact, if they work out over half the time, I’d consider it a success. These matchup rankings & streamer picks are going to be wildly different than the actual results throughout the year, so please, have sympathy before the scathing comments and tweets. I’m only trying to help!
Make sure to read the notes if you’re wondering why I’m favoring certain pitchers over others – I won’t get to everyone and hopefully I answer what questions you will have.
There is a second table for tomorrow’s starting pitcher matchups as well, helping everyone get a jump on their nightly pickups. Please note that these matchups are subject to change, though, and there will be times when I have the incorrect pitcher going. I thank you for your future understanding.
Finally, there are my streaming picks of the day, and please keep in mind that I am forced to pick a streamer every day. Those highlighted in Green are in the second tier and I’d roll with them everywhere. The most common are those in Yellow in the third tier and should be decent if you’re searching for something on a given day. Finally, those are Red are those I really don’t want to start (they are labeled as “Do Not Start”, after all) but have no other choice. Don’t stream these guys until you are truly desperate. A streaming pick is defined as “rostered in 20% or fewer leagues,” which really emphasizes the point that I’d be happy if over 50% of these worked. I could do the whole sub 30/40% rostered, but there’s no fun in that. You can use the rankings to realize who would be those picks, instead.

As I do my rankings, I thought it would be helpful to showcase a table of how we’re ranking offenses. Dave Swan does an incredible job of showcasing future SP matchups every 2-3 weeks in this article, and I’ve elected to use his offense ranks to share with all of you here:
I’m sure it’ll change through the year + there are differences to be made about teams vs. LHP or RHP, but it’s a great general table that y’all should keep in mind.
Alright, let’s get to it.
2022 Streamer Record: 60-47
Today’s Starting Pitcher Rankings
- The top tier is filled with the normal studs and while it feels weird to see Pablo López sixth after his dominant performance last week, take a look at the matchups for the five guys above him. The studs have it good on Sunday.
- Speaking of which, José Berríos has it as good as it can be against the Tigers and it elevates him to the top tier, despite not being the consistent arm you envisioned on draft day. If you have Berríos and not starting him against Detroit, what’s the point?
- Ending the tier is Taijuan Walker, facing a mediocre Marlins crew. He’s been incredibly solid and I’d be shocked to find a manager holding back Walker.
- I elected to kick off the second tier with Jordan Montgomery and Merrill Kelly, two arms flirting with a 3.00 ERA who should be fine to go Sunday.
- I had a hard time ranking Nick Lodolo and Reid Detmers, ultimately deciding who the streaming pick of the day was going to be. I went with Lodolo due to Detmers still struggling to get whiffs on his slider + the Rangers being a touch more difficult than the Orioles, even in GABP.
- The third tier begins with a pair of arms who could enter the second tier or even the first if they had better matchups. Tony Gonsolin recently stumbled and now has to face Coors, while Aaron Ashby had a promising seven inning, 111-pitch outing but may take a step back against the Red Sox.
- The bottom pair are Dane Dunning and Jake Odorizzi facing easier squads. Dunning’s command was excellent last time out and the Angels are floundering as much as anyone. Odorizzi took a step back in his last two starts, but could recover for the Mariners.
- Update: The Nationals are starting Josiah Gray on Sunday and while he’s a bit of a Cherry Bomb, I think you’re okay starting him, especially if you need some last minute strikeouts.
- In the bottom tier, it may be a surprise to see both Sean Manaea and George Kirby present, but it’s for good reason. Manaea hasn’t had his secondaries for a bit and now faces the tough Twins offense, while we shouldn’t overlook that Kirby was limited to near 50 pitches last time. It grants a capped ceiling with an already low floor facing the Astros.
- JT Brubaker and Adrian Sampson are solid dart throws if you’re looking for some Sunday magic. Coffee Cakes could have his breakers against a volatile Phillies squad, while Sampson has moments where he’s able to carve lineups and the Giants aren’t as looming as their name suggests.
Tomorrow’s Starting Pitcher Rankings
- We’re two days away from the trade deadline, which means there will be plenty of players changing teams and some surprise expected starts on the horizon. Make sure to monitor twitter (or our PL+ Discord!) to stay on top of who is starting and when.
- As for the top tier, yes I’m placing Jon Gray second as he just say 98 mph and faces the Orioles. He’s in the best place I’ve seen him in his career and you best start him against the Orioles.
- As for the second tier, Mike Clevinger gets a cushy start against Rockie Road and leads the way. Andrew Heaney should have a longer leash in his second outing and I think it’s worth your while.
- Braxton Garrett and Hunter Greene are a bick trickier to rank in a matchup against each other, though they both generally should be beneficial, with Garrett’s whiff-heavy slider & Greene’s fastball/slider mix.
- The third tier starts with Michael Kopech as I’m still a little worried he’s dealing with his knee injury, even against the Royals, while Tarik Skubal has looked a bit better as of late, but has a tough challenge against the Twins. There’s a small gap between Kopech vs. Skubal + the other pair in the tier.
- Between Domingo Germán and Devin Smeltzer, I’m favoring the latter as tomorrow’s streaming pick. His last start was a surprising 67 pitches, but against the Tigers, he should be able to go five productive frames.
- As for Domingo Germán, I liked his breaker against the Mets, and while I was originally questioning if he’ll even make the start (will the Yankees acquire an arm before then?), it seems there’s little time left to push him back. This could work out with 6+ strikeouts.
- In the bottom tier, we have some Toby types, including Cal Quantrill, Spenser Watkins, Marco Gonzales, and Brad Keller. Quantrill has been shaky for a good while and I wouldn’t like to rely on him, Watkins had a misstep last start, Marco gets the Yankees, and Keller is…well, Keller.
- Lastly, I’m terrified of Nathan Eovaldi’s recent drop in velocity and a date with the Astros seems like a proper disaster. Avoid this.
