Much of Gallen’s rookie season success rode on the strength of his lively changeup, generating a nifty 21.3% swinging-strike rate, got batters swinging out of the zone at a 45.3% chase rate, and induced a 64.5% ground-ball rate. The change-of-speed offering, good for a 6.0 pVAL, neutralized batters to a .160 BAA, .040 ISO, and .211 wOBA.
Buouyed by a 45.2% chase rate, Gallen’s curveball almost sported Money Pitch potential if it could have found the zone a little more often (36.9% zone rate) and missed just a couple more bats (14.8% swinging-strike rate). Baseball Savant notes Gallen’s curve has a below average spin rate, in the 37th percentile.
Gallen’s fastball averaged 92.9 mph and topped out at 96.5 mph. It showed above-average spin (71st percentile) and held hitters to an excellent .192 BAA and .303 wOBA.
Gallen’s cutter showed excellent horizontal movement and averaged 87 mph while topping out at 92 mph. It returned an excellent 53% zone rate and respectable 27.4% whiff rate while holding opposing bats to a solid .311 xwOBA.
