The Cuban Missle can still hit 100mph on the radar-gun but has started to slowly use his fastball less and less. It might be for the best, as his velocity has dropped two years in a row and his swinging-strike rate on the fastball was the lowest of his career.
Much like his fastball, Chapman has lost some velocity on his slider but he can still ramp it up to 90 mph to get a ton of strikeouts. It features a TON of horizontal movement and was able to get swings outside the zone 40% of the time.
Averaging 98.9 mph and throwing it 74.72% of the time in 2018, Chapman continues to dominate hitters with his four-seam fastball. A 12.7% swinging-strike rate is high for a fastball, and he did not surrender a single home run with the pitch, which both contributed a 5.5 pVal.
Used as Chapman’s out pitch as evidenced by the 73.5% strikeout pitch, the slider was highly effective for in 2018 with a 6.5 pVal. It featured an impressive 24.5% swinging-strike rate along with a 42.5% O-swing rate. The result was a .109/.162/.203 batting line against the pitch.
