Today’s Headlines

Arenado, Ramírez Named POTM for April

The first Monday of May brought more than just post-shower flowers. MLB handed out its “Players of the Month” awards, and a pair of third basemen pulled down the top honor in each league:

Arenado and Ramírez certainly earned it. The Cardinals’ slugger is off to a scorching .368/.435/.697 start at the plate with six home runs and an NL-leading 1.133 OPS, while the Guardians’ MVP boasts a .341/.421/.707 slash line and leads the majors in both total bases and RBIs.

On down the list, Logan Gilbert and Pablo López took home “Pitcher of the Month” in their respective leagues after finishing 1-2 in qualified ERA last month. For “Rookie of the Month,” two players of Asian descent earned the honor in Steven Kwan and Seiya Suzuki, each of whom have managed to dramatically exceed expectations with their new clubs so far. And finally, Jordan Romano and Josh Hader wrapped up the  “Reliever of the Month” awards with their typically dominant bullpen work.

Now, on to the baseball…

Michael A.’s High-Flying Robbery

The highlight of the day came early on Monday, as the Royals and Cardinals kicked off their intra-state series with a noon CT first pitch at Busch Stadium. St. Louis won 1-0, all anyone’s likely to remember is this gravity-defying catch by Michael A. Taylor:

They say a picture’s worth a thousand words, so here’s 2,000 that tell the story better than anything I can write:

So many great faces here, but most importantly: that baby will be hearing this story for the rest of his or her life. Put it on the mantle!

Master Cease Wins Duel of Dynamos

Outside of López v. Zac Gallen, the pitching matchup of the day was between Dylan Cease and Patrick Sandoval in Chicago. But while the Irish Panda pitched decently, it was Cease who stole the show. He made arguably the best start of his career, allowing just one hit in seven frames and striking out 11. Check out some of these nasty offerings:

Now take another look, with a little PitchingNinja overlay action thrown in:

Hard is one word for it, Mr. Ninja. Oooof.

Yankees Win 10th Straight in Toronto

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: the hottest team in baseball resides in the Bronx. The Yankees pulled out another late victory on Monday, beating the Jays after this ninth-inning knock by Gleybar Torres:

Torres drove in all three Yankee runs on the day, after originally putting them up with a fourth-inning homer (his third). But it was his teammate, Giancarlo Stanton, who stole the top highlight… on defense?

Believe it. The Bombers added another game to their AL East lead with the victory, which now stands at +2.5. But with two more still to play this week, that could change quickly.

D’Arnaud Drops Old Club in Queens

Each year, the Mets jump out to a hot start and seize control of the NL East early. And each year, Atlanta inevitably chases them down as New York succumbs to its self-inflicted wounds. Granted, this version of the Mets appears a little more built for lasting success than most — but if you only saw last night’s game, you wouldn’t know it.

Facing the defending champs for the first time in 2022, the Mets staked themselves to a 2-0 lead early. Then Austin Riley chimed in with his ninth home run in 75 career ABs at Citi Field:

Atlanta went on to take the lead in the sixth, after ex-Met Travis d’Arnaud doubled home the tying run off Chris Bassitt. Speaking of former teammates, Bassitt had a humorous exchange with his old A’s buddy Matt Olson after this swing:

Then in the eighth, d’Arnaud returned to wreak a little more havoc in his old digs:

The veteran backstop finished the game with a season-high three hits and three RBIs in a 5-2 win, giving Atlanta score #1 in what should be a terrific season-long rivalry.

Best Moments From Yesterday

School? On a Day Like This?

The Angels are in Chicago this week, and one young fan took a cue from Ferris Bueller in this creative attempt to meet Mike Trout:

It worked out alright for him. Kids, I’m not saying you should do this, but if you happen to have a sign handy…

Old Kids on the Block

Adam Wainwright, Yadier Molina and Albert Pujols have played more games together in Cardinal red than just about anyone. But watching the veteran trio goof off will never get old:

Oh, to be a fly in that dugout.

Flying Florida Fellas

There are few more electric sights in baseball than Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the basepaths, as he reminded us all on Monday:

With that said, the team from Tampa has a positively-charged answer in Wander Franco:

League, meet “good hands.”

Think of the Children

Lastly, a pair of AL East stars were caught sharing the love with the next generation. Here’s Ryan Mountcastle obliging a young O’s fan on his birthday:

And in Toronto, Gerrit Cole was seen lending his time to a Jays fan still in diapers:

Start ’em young. That’s how you build your brand.
