MLB News & Moments You Should Know – Aug. 9

Somehow, we're still looking forward to the "Field of Dreams" game.

Stay updated on everything baseball with our morning MLB News & Moments articles. We’ve got you covered to keep you in the know.

Another Monday has come and gone, and with it, baseball’s weekly reset. Just 14 teams were in action yesterday, but those games included many of the league’s best squads — including the Mets and Yankees, two New York teams riding opposite vibes coming out of the weekend. The Mets returned home after taking four of five games from their division rivals in Atlanta, while the Yankees were unceremoniously swept by the Cardinals.

The result? Each team entered play on Monday with a matching 70-39 record, tied for second-best in the game. But it’s a new week now, and that means back to work, no matter what happened yesterday. Here are a few of the early top stories and moments from week No. 19.

Today’s Headlines

If You Sell it, They Will Come

MLB’s second annual “Field of Dreams” game is coming up this week, and by “coming up,” I mean exactly two days from now. This year’s matchup features the Cubs and Reds, two historic franchises and division rivals who also happen to be among the worst and least-compelling excuses for Major League rosters you’ll see in the year of our Lord, 2022. But other than that, it should be fun!

Yesterday, the special-edition throwback uniforms that each team will be wearing on Thursday were released. Check out these pinstripe threads Cincinnati is rocking:

And for the Cubbies, it looks like they’re going with the classic cream-and navy look:

Will I buy this? No, but they are pretty sweet. Am I still going to watch? Almost certainly. Curse that childhood nostalgia…

Carry On, My Heyward Son

Speaking of the Cubs, they were busy on Monday. In addition to beating the Nationals 6-3, the club announced it would be parting ways with veteran outfielder Jason Heyward at the end of the year. In doing so they’ll still be on the hook for the final installment of the eight-year, $184 million contract they signed him to in 2015. The move allows Heyward, currently on the IL, to prepare for free agency in the winter.

The announcement came just a few hours after the club officially claimed Franmil Reyes, another veteran OF, off waivers from Cleveland. The Franimal should see no shortage of ABs in Chicago, despite his .603 OPS on the year.

Birds of a Feather: Arenado, Gausman Take POTW Honors

Monday is superlatives time, and there’s nothing better than meaningless weekly honors to stir up conversation on a travel day. The latest MLB Player of the Week awards, as announced by @MLB, are Nolan Arenado and Kevin Gausman. Nice work, fellas.

Do they get trophies for this stuff? I’m genuinely curious.

Best Moments from Yesterday

Mounting the Wall

The Orioles have been a wonderful story of late, posting a top-three record in baseball over the last month. But they’ve oddly done most of that winning without getting much from Ryan Mountcastle, a primary power threat. But he turned it around on Monday, snapping a 110-PA homerless streak with this third-inning bomb:

He was as surprised as anyone by this development, based on his reaction in the dugout:

As a Baltimore Orioles truther, this content is certified Me-Approved.

All That and Mor(a)

The Mets cruised to a 5-1 victory in their series-opener against Cincinnati, but they would’ve scored two more if not for this terrific grab by Albert Almora Jr.:

Not a bad way to get back at your former team.

Mean Mr. Mustard

The Guardians dropped a bomb on the baseball world Monday morning with this seismic press release: Mustard, one of three condiments that regularly participates in the Progressive Field Hot Dog races, is being optioned to the minors.

Suffice it to say, he’s not taking it well:

Here’s hoping it’s a minor setback for a major comeback. But come on man, oh-for-fifty?

Juan Happy Family

It was a rough weekend for the Padres, scoring just four runs in a three-game sweep by the Dodgers. But Juan Soto’s new club appears unbothered by the disappointing early returns. Now, where can I get THIS shirt?

Meanwhile in other Wholesome Padres Content, here’s a video from Sunday of Manny Machado making nice with some fans. You know, just because.

Injuries

  • Kyle Hendricks underwent an MRI for his injured right shoulder on Monday, as his status for the rest of the season remains up in the air.
  • Mickey Moniak has a fractured finger that could end his season, but the Angels are being coy on that front for now.
  • Joe Barlow may be activated from the IL before the Rangers-Astros game today, according to manager Chris Woodward.
