Today’s Headlines

Luis Castillo and the Seattle Mariners have reached a 5-year, $108 million contract extension.

The Mariners traded for the right-handed pitcher at the trade deadline as they made their push for the playoffs. With this extension, they lock Castillo into their starting rotation until his age-34 season. Per ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the deal could be worth up to $133 million if a sixth-year vesting option is picked up.

The Cleveland Guardians‘ magic number is 1.

With their win against the Texas Rangers on Sunday, the Cleveland Guardans’ magic number shrinks to just one more game! The Guardians have won nine of their last ten games and are on a six game winning streak, including a three-game sweep of their division rival Chicago White Sox. With another win, Cleveland will return to the playoffs and hope to avenge their 2020 AL Wild Card defeat.

Welcome to the 20-30-40 club, Randy Arozarena!

With a double in Sunday night’s game, Randy Arozarena collected his 40th double of the season. The Rays’ outfield also has 20 home runs and 32 stolen bases in 2022, making him the first playing in Tampa Bay Rays franchise history to accomplish the 20-30-40 feat.

The Cy is yours, Sandy Alcantara!

If there were any remaining doubts about the winner of the NL Cy Young, Sandy Alcantara’s performance on Saturday should make it clear he deserves the award. His 99th and final pitch of the night was a 101 mph fastball, securing him his 11th strikeout of the night. With one more outing to go, Alcantara holds a 2.32 ERA with 199 strikeouts in 220.2 innings.

Tony La Russa will not return to manage the Chicago White Sox in 2022.

The team announced on Saturday that La Russa will not manage the rest of the season. Bench coach Miguel Cairo, who has taken La Russa’s spot as acting manager in his absence, will continue to manage the team through the end of the season.

A picture with Salvador Perez is worth a thousand words.

Perez saw the fan with a sign — The Royals saw me through cancer! Can I get a Salvy pic? — on the big screen while warming up before the game, according to Royals beat writer Anne Rogers. He immediately went over, signed the poster, and posed for a picture.

Good defense is so underrated.

Vladdy’s got the splits, Vinnie’s got the stretches, and Oakland has the speed!
