Bautista’s fastball velocity, sitting in the high nineties and occasionally touching triple digits, is unquestionable. But the young flamethrower’s command woes steal some sheen from the four-seamer’s gaudy radar-gun readings: The pitch sports an unsightly 22.9% walk rate and got knocked around for a .385/.514/.654 line.
Bautista’s slider represents a nifty 11 mph swing in velocity from his flamethrowing fireball, and it’s a pitch the hard-throwing Mariner has flashed better control of: A 14.3% K-BB rate sits comfortably around league average, and isn’t underwater like his four-seamer’s percentage.
Bautista’s 97 mph fastball was not effective in 2018. He walked more than he struck out with the pitch and allowed two home runs on 73 thrown. Batters also slugged at a .625 ISO on it.
Bautista threw 15 sliders in 2018, and it was an average pitch. He threw it for a strike 67% of the time and generated good lateral movement with it.
