Shaw throws his cut fastball over 75% of the time and generates good glove side movement which often jams left-handed hitters. The pitch has a velocity of 92-93 mph and has an xMov of 2.4 inches. Even with the high usage, the pitch was average in 2019 as it generated a 52.3% GB% but hitters slashed .245/.347/.428 for a wRC+ of 107.
Used as his main secondary pitch, Shaw threw his slider over 17% of the time with good horizontal and downward movement. The pitch averages 82 mph with an xMov of 5.6 inches and a zMov of 5 inches. Despite throwing the pitch over 200 times in 2019, Shaw didn’t surrender any walks on his slider and got hitters to chase 42.4% of the time. The pitch also resulted in a K% of 40.8%, which amounts to 20 SOs over 49 ABs.
Opponents’ BABIP against Shaw’s cutter jumped over 100 points in 2018, to .386. The result was a .326 average and .511 slugging percentage against the pitch despite a 49.7% ground-ball rate.
Despite his move to Coors, Shaw saw his slider picked up some drop in 2018. It produced an elite 22.9% whiff rate and equally impressive 45.4% chase rate. Hitters crushed it when they did make contact, though, posting a .513 slugging against the pitch.
