Colon remained fastball-heavy in 2018, but the pitch clocks in at just 87 mph on average now. It was knocked around a bit to a .361 wOBA allowed. The pitch still has its moments, but it was not good enough to keep Colon a viable pitcher.
Colon’s changeup performed well in the plate discipline department, posting a chase rate over 50% and a whiff rate of nearly 15%. It was absolutely rocked on contact, though. Opposing batters swatted seven long balls off the pitch en route to a 1.135 OPS allowed on the pitch.
For the fifth straight season, Colon’s slider induced under 10% whiffs. The pitch no longer has the stuff to provide Colon with much as his breaking-ball option.
This was the first appearance of the cutter we’ve seen from Colon in a while. He threw it only 52 times, but it was rocked to a 1.158 OPS and induced only a single whiff.
