Following up on our weekly Closers and Holds articles will be our Top 100 RP’s for SV+HD leagues every Friday. Use this list to get a feel for the current reliever market and to gauge value for trades, waiver adds, etc.
Notes
- Perhaps the biggest piece of news around Major League Baseball yesterday was that of the Cardinals signing Greg Holland to a one year contract. While he will take over the closer’s gig, it likely won’t happen for at least a week or two. He has been throwing and keeping in shape, but the team will probably want him to get some actual game action in the minors first, perhaps going on somewhat of a rehab stint. Dominic Leone is obviously the biggest loser in all of this, but I still think he will be plenty useful in holds leagues. I also wonder how serious Luke Gregerson’s injury is for the Cardinals to all of a sudden rush to make this move.
- The other big reliever news story of the day was that Mark Melancon indeed will need a DL stint. After signing a 4 year, $62 million contract last offseason, he has continuously struggled to stay on the field and is looking like a shaky fantasy asset moving forward. The biggest beneficiary here is Hunter Strickland, as it sounds like Bruce Bochy is finally going to allow him to close out games. After refusing to in the past, the move says to me that Melancon’s injury may keep him out for a good chunk of the year. Strickland should be added in most formats, but just be aware he may bring with him a high WHIP and poor strikeout numbers.
- I know Phillies fans are calling for Hector Neris’s head, and there were a bunch of other names on this list who pitched poorly yesterday, but let’s just keep in mind that its the first day of the season and not to make any rash decisions just yet. We have a lot of season left and I’m still high on Neris. This is the time to buy low if you have owners in your league that love to make impulsive roster moves this time of the year.
That being said, you can go ahead and drop Fernando Rodney now…

Kelvin Herrera isn’t even in the top 100? He’s that bad?
Whoops. I had him at 44 then went to go change things around to move Strickland up and forgkt to add him back. So consider him and Strickland 44a, 44b.
Where does Hunter Strickland rank, now that he is a closer?
The rankings take into account Stricklands temporary promotion, so 44. He really only helps in ERA and potentially saves.
