- Obviously, the big reliever news of the week is the signing of Craig Kimbrel by the Cubs, but because he is still a few weeks away, he won’t be added to the list quite yet. When he does return, he’ll find himself inside the top 10 right away. Dellin Betances continues to work his way back and should return by the end of the month. With the Yankees bullpen firing on all cylinders right now, it will be interesting to see who gets bumped out of the holds mix, but as of now, it would likely be Jonathan Holder. When Betances returns, expect a top 25 ranking.
- We have nine new additions this week, which include Yusmeiro Petit, Jesse Chavez, Jairo Diaz, Anthony Bass, Wander Suero, Francisco Liriano, Liam Hendricks, and Heath Hembree. Diaz seems to have emerged as the Rockies top setup man for the time being and now has three holds in his first nine appearances. Despite Suero’s 6.23 ERA, I’m still confident he is the second-best reliever in that bullpen, and he has a 3.31 xFIP, 3.06 SIERA, 23.9 K-BB%, plus a 15% swinging-strike rate to back it up. Hembree is emerging as another reliever for Alex Cora to rely on late in games for the Sox, but there’s a lot of competition there for saves/holds and things seem to be changing weekly in Boston.
- Leaving the list are Seranthony Dominguez, Justin Anderson, Kelvin Herrera, Connor Sadzeck, Adam Kolarek, Jeurys Familia, Kyle Barraclough, and Roenis Elias. While he hasn’t been placed on the IL yet, it seems inevitable, regardless of the MRI results, that Seranthony will miss at least 10 days with elbow soreness. Familia may be a lost cause at this point and looks to be this year’s A.J. Ramos/Addison Reed.
- Six relievers had three holds this past week, including Sean Doolittle, Brad Hand, Will Harris, Heath Hembree, Chris Martin, and Sean Newcomb. While it’s been a tumultuous season to say the least for the Indians, one of the few bright spots has been Hand, who’s a perfect 18/18 in save chances to go with a 1.05 ERA, .78 WHIP, and 12.62 K/9.
T Rogers probably deserves a bigger bump considering recent deployment of the bullpen. Feels like a T2.
Any reason for Britton’s fall?
Lastly, is it crazy to think that Strop may gain value being moved to set-up? Less pressure perhaps more hold opps?
with the recent developments in Minnesota, I could see Rogers at the end of tier 2. Definitely the guy to own there going forward.
Britton’s fall mostly has to do with others moving up and I was preferring Kahnle and his K upside to him, although that may have changed after yesterday.
I wouldn’t say Strop will gain value, but it very much could stay about the same. It’d be really difficult to see more hold chances as a setup man than save chances as a closer but less pressure could result in better ratio’s. I wouldn’t drop Strop much lower if Kimbrel were to be activated today.
