Notes

  • We have 10 new additions this week, which include Wade Davis, A.J. Minter, Anthony Swarzak, Julio Urias, Jeurys Familia, Daniel Hudson, Tanner Rainey, Aaron Bummer, Tim Mayza, and Juan Nicasio. Davis made his first appearance since May 14 a week ago and has looked like his normal self so far. The 2.55 ERA is nice to see, but that 1.47 WHIP keeps him in Tier 3. Minter is finally making his return to the Braves bullpen after pitching well in Triple-A, but so far, the results haven’t been too encouraging. He’s still an interesting gamble given his immense talent, but just expect a few speed bumps along the way.
  • Leaving the list are Ken Giles, Sean Newcomb, Carl Edwards Jr. Carlos Estevez, Brandon Brennan, Touki Toussant, Andrew Chafin, Jacob Webb, Anthony Bass, and Scott Barlow. Giles, who is in the midst of a career year (minus the low save totals) was unfortunately placed on the IL with elbow inflammation on Wednesday. It sounds like he will only miss the minimum 10 days, but for a team not competing for a playoff spot this year, it wouldn’t hurt to play it safe with their star closer’s elbow. Newcomb is returning to the Braves rotation, and assuming things go well, he probably has a shot to stick around for at least another start or two or whenever Dallas Keuchel is ready.
  • While we had 16 relievers pick up at least two  SV+HDs this past week, Aaron Bummer and Anthony Swarzak were the only relievers with three. Bummer has filled in nicely as Alex Colome’s top setup man as of late and should continue in the role moving forward. Swarzak is looking like a great low-cost addition to the Braves as he has been lights out since leaving Seattle.

So confused by D Castillo over L Jackson here.
Castillo has been doing his best stealth Predator impression lately. He’s invisible!
And Jackson is literally being dragged out for the 9th every other day.
What gives? Do you think Minter cuts into Jackson’s role?
    Ty!

    • Rick Graham says:

Yea thats a fair point. I may still be leaning towards past performance too much for those two. Jackson has been better than I’d ever expect and theres nothing really there to suggest he’ll slow down anytime soon. The one thing I am skeptical about is Jackson’s pitch usage, as I don’t remember ever seeing a closer throw his primary fastballI under 40% of the time. I still think the Braves need to make a splash at the closer position but Jackson would still be a great set up option. Minter doesn’t worry me yet but eventually could work his way into a platoon with Jackson if the Braves stand pat at the deadline.

The whole Rays situation is really annoying, especially considering the talent level there with Castillo, Pagan and Alvarado. I’m hoping all 3 can settle into roles at some point going forward but for now it’s certainly frustrating.

D Castillo has pitched 1.1 innings over the past 15 games! That is nuts.
I’ve been keeping him active all these weeks, but taking that 0 is starting to hurt, especially in a Points league.

Brebbia is never given HLD opportunities and for good reason. How does he get such a high ranking?
