- After serving up a walk-off home run to Jarrod Dyson of all people, Jose Leclerc followed up Tuesday’s outing struggling to command his fastball and leaving sliders up in the zone. He was only able to throw 3 of 11 fastballs for strikes, missing glove side and high for the most part while also leaving 4 of 7 sliders in the top half of the zone. He probably just needs to make a simple mechanical adjustment, however, he has had pronounced issues with his command throughout his career. There’s still a top-10 reliever here, but the next few outings will be important in showing where his season may be headed. It was nice to see Chris Woodward call him his best pitcher after the game Wednesday, so Leclerc should have a long leash here to figure things out.
- Pedro Strop finally got his first save of the year last night, which now leaves Sean Doolittle as the only full-time closer without a save at the moment. Doolittle has still been pitching well and has three wins while not allowing a run yet, so we just have to be patient there. Strop, on the other hand, hasn’t done enough to this point to make Joe Maddon second-guess a decision to reinsert Brandon Morrow into the closer’s role when he returns. There’s still some time left, but it’s fading fast.
- Padres relievers Kirby Yates and Craig Stammen led relievers this past week with four saves/holds each, and while both got the day off yesterday, it was Trey Wingenter who recorded the save. The tall righty has posted great strikeout numbers in the minors, and as long as he can keep his walk rate around 10% or lower, he should be a good value for holds, strikeouts and decent ratios.
It doesn’t appear the change column is working on my end.
Yeah – I’m seeing ‘UR’ for all except Robertson on my end.

Can you talk about Doolittle a bit and why he’s so high? He doesn’t jump out at me in any way.
Arguably a top 5 RP last season and has been fine this year. The saves chances will come, the Nationals will win some close games.
Have you looked at his stats? I like them. Double digit K/9 is in the bag. BB/9 below 2. His career whip is .89. Job security. Solid team. The only problem is the durability… but closers all have problems. I don’t know what there is not to like.
AJ Minter looks broken.
Only 2 IP so far. Willing to give him some time to work things out. The closer role atleast seems to be his.
I doubt that. Vizcaino never lost the job and the fact that they keep coming back to him tells you that they don’t hate him in the role. Why would they hand it off to a guy who has never proven anything? I think a committee is more likely unless Vizcaino actually hits the shelf – which is entirely possible. As much as AV isn’t elite, we quickly find out that most people can’t handle the role once given the chance. I think the fact that they are limiting AVs use tells you that they care about his future enough that they value him. To be clear, I am super confused about AVs status but I don’t think you should have any certainty about the contingency plan. They have a host of AAA players that would be good fits for the role just to dampen the long-term enthusiasm. I think this will be one of those situations that will become clear at some point later in the season and the most liekly scenario is AV as the guy. Why else would they be limiting his use? Its so weird to me that he is hurt-ish but not on the DL.
Would you trade Leclerc for McCutchen? Current relievers are Hand, Holland, D. Castillo and Leclerc.
If I did make this trade I would have to play the wavier wire for possible saves. I could use the production of McCutchen to round out a strong hitters lineup.

I’d probably do it, especially if its a 5 OF league. I’m all for cashing in RP’s for equal or better value bats/starters. Saves will become available.
Any love for Adam Morgan? I wouldn’t have had him top 100 at the start of the season, but he’s been getting hold opportunities not only in the 6th inning, but in the 7th and 8th innings as well.
He was on the holds list yesterday and just missed this one today.
Bradley has given up runs in back to back appearances and his whip is about 1.7. Do your rankings just look at likelihood of saves plus holds when it comes down to players who are closely grouped? Or do k, whip, era projections push someone ahead in the ranks. I have to choose 2 from Bradley, S Dominguez, barnes and Rogers. I thought Dominguez would be higher on the list. Which 2 of that group do you prefer?
I have to admit, I love seeing the next great RP eat it. I mean I don’t like to see anyone fail, but I it never gets old to see people not learn their lessons. Not criticizing your work – it comes with the territory. Its funny how many guys get billed as the next Kenley, Kimbrell, Aroldis. LeClerc comments aside, keep up the work – this is a always a great resource.
Would you adjust these rankings if you have a k/9 category in addition to SV and HLDS?
