Okay. This is going to be a lot.
We’re already past labor day with three weeks to go in the season, and as tradition, I move away from the standard Top 100 SP List in favor of showcasing expected schedules the rest of the year, then highlighting which pitchers should be considered, streamed, and ignored. There are a few reasons to do so:
- Trade deadlines have passed meaning the value between the different Top 20/30 SP is meaningless. Start them or not is all that matters
- Schedules now have the largest influence in performance as matchups are more important than general ability in a very small sample
- This is the best way to help fantasy managers – highlight the best schedules and most likely to perform well vs. me grading a pitcher’s general performance in a neutral setting.
- It’s tradition.
What I’ve done are a few things. First, I livestreamed earlier this afternoon and worked out which offenses belonged in one of the five tiers:
- Red = Elite Offense Tier
- Yellow = Solid Offense Tier
- Gray = Netural Tier
- Blue = below Average Tier
- Green =Please-Start-Against-Me Tier
From here, with the help of the great Colin Charles, we looked at the expected rotations and schedules for each team, creating tables using the color code to highlight their expected schedule.
I’ve written notes under each rotation’s table outlining who to start, stream, and what kind of gambles you can take.
There is a lot of nuances, though. Should you roster a pitcher for a start against the Diamondbacks this week or maybe stash for their final two starts against the Nationals and Marlins? Please don’t hesitate to leave a comment and I’ll get to all your questions tonight to help you make sense of it all.
Lastly, I have to note: These expected rotations will change. I did my best trying to work it all out, but more doubleheaders are likely to abound, which potential postponements, injuries, and surprise call-ups. I’ll update this again next week and hopefully it’ll be a lot of the same.
Alright, enough introduction, let’s get to the offense table:
I’m sure there are a few points of contention here and please send them my way. I can imagine changing the Yankees to a neutral or even yellow offense once they get healthier and I often debated with the grouping of the Phillies and Cubs. We’ll see if this sticks and if you feel differently, well fortunately you can change things for yourself.

Luke Weaver – Maybe consideration against the Mariners and Rockies, but not Dodgers or Astros. Really depends on that cutter returning tonight if I’d trust him for Seattle. Who knows how he’ll look going into that fourth start.
Taylor Clarke – No thanks.
Madison Bumgarner – I’d only consider him for the third start against the Rangers. His diminished velocity is hurting things. A lot.
Alex Young – He’s worth consideration as a deep streamer against Seattle and Texas, but I’d be out completely against the Angels unless he wildly impresses vs. SEA.
Zac Gallen – Start him. Duh.
Team Notes: The Diamondbacks have a doubleheader on the 25th that will feature a different pitcher + Caleb Smith will rejoin the team at some point and could step into another pitcher’s role, or turn it into a six-man. I’d only consider him for those final Rangers/Rockies series and we’ll get a better sense if he’s locked in by then. I’m leaning that he won’t.

Kyle Wright / Josh Tomlin – Absolutely not. Maybe a deep stream of Tomlin vs. Miami on the 22nd, but that’s still too risky. Wright doesn’t have his command and unless something shows up in his next three starts, I’m out for the Marlins on the 24th.
Tommy Milone – It’s a risk streaming against Miami, and if you can’t do it then, you wouldn’t against the Mets or Red Sox. Maybe the Orioles if he kills it against Miami.
Ian Anderson – Yes please, even with his poor outing on Monday. I want him for all three.
Team Notes: There’s an open spot with Max Fried on the IL and we’re not sure who gets it. I imagine I’ll be out completely, but the 9/21 Miami start could be fruitful if it’s the right replacement, like a Mike Foltynewicz throwing 95+ mph again.

John Means – As much as I wish I could say all he needs is a start of two, he hasn’t displayed changeup command all year and it’s tough to say it’ll happen now. It’s a rough road ahead and I’d step away completely.
Thomas Eshelman – He’s not the droid arm you’re looking for. Likely not sticking around for long and, you know, it’s Eshelman.
Keegan Akin – There’s a consideration for the Yankee start over the weekend, and possibly as a late stream against the Jays, but man that’s a rough Braves/Sawx back-to-back…if he even gets them. I’d generally avoid Akin.
Dean Kremer – It’s the same mostly with Kremer, though he has a little more upside. If he kills it with the Yankees, I can see myself leaning again vs. the Rays, but for the most part, I’m out.
Team Notes: You may have noticed Asher Wojciechowski missing (likely starting on the ninth) but when he does, I’d avoid. His stuff hasn’t been the whifftastic effort we saw for a glimpse last year and I wouldn’t expect it to return…whenever he does return to the rotation. We also don’t know how Jorge Lopez or Alex Cobb (currently on the IL) fit into the equation, but hopefully it means Kremer sticks around and they don’t go six-man.

Nathan Eovaldi – I imagine Eovaldi could return from the IL on the 12th and get some decent starts down the stretch. I wouldn’t take a shot until the Orioles, though, and that may not even be worth your time.

Dylan Cease – Man, look at that schedule! I expect his ERA to fall to the 4.00s based on ability, but his matchups are doing everything they can to help. Shockingly risky, still.
Dane Dunning – I’d let him fly against the Pirates, but the Twins send him back to the wire. Let’s see if he’s still around for those starts against the Reds or Indians, he’s not that safe, though, so I’d only push it if I needed to.
Lucas Giolito – Aces gonna ace, you. He’s as locked in as anyone right now and be happy you have four starts of it.
Dallas Keuchel – I’m not sure he makes that start on the 12th as he’s dealing with back stiffness at the moment. I’d roll him out there for all these starts, though, even against the Twins.
Gio Gonzalez – The White Sox can likely skip him this weekend with a day off on the 10th and I’m not sure he gets the fifth spot moving forward. Not worth the risk against Cleveland.

Anthony DeSclafani – He’s been struggling lately and I wouldn’t entrust him with a start against the Reds and definitely not the White Sox. If he gets the Brewers, I’d consider it, but we’ll see if he even gets there.
Tejay Antone – He’ll likely get the doubleheader on the 14th with a chance to steal Tony Disco’s spot after if the Reds use the 17th day off to reset the rotation. I don’t love him, but I would consider starting him against Milwaukee if he gets that chance (probably not).

Framber Valdez – His curveball was gone last time and while this is a sit against the Dodgers, he should be worth it against the Diamondbacks and Mariners

Brad Keller – He’s trending down with his velocity while his new breaker was super effective just once. I’m not diving back in despite the schedule.

I think they’re both good for that final start, but things may get shaken up as the Dodgers tweak their post-season rotation. At any rate, I think they are both too much of a risk against the Astros, followed by a trip to Coors may warrant a drop. Blegh.

Sixto Sanchez – I’m starting him in full, even against the Braves. I love this kid.
Pablo Lopez – I think I’m doing the same, though I’ll keep my fingers crossed he gets that changeup down again.
Sandy Alcantara – Save for the start against Boston, you should feel good the rest of the way. If his changeup is there against Philly, I’d feel confident against the Red Sox, too.
Trevor Rogers – That’s a tempting start against the Phillies given his ability to keep his sliders and changeups down. I think the Yankees will be better than a Tier 4 offense by the final week and I’d drop after the Phillies start. No thanks, Boston.
Jose Urena – There isn’t enough in this repertoire for me to feel good starting him anywhere.
Team Notes: The Marlins have a ton of doubleheaders after missing plenty of games. It’s unclear who gets those starts (Dan Castano?) but I wouldn’t touch them.

Josh Lindblom – His velocity has fallen below 90 mph and while he’s getting slider whiffs, it’s not enough. I’d sit this out and see if he takes a step forward before trusting in any of these.

Rich Hill – Ehhhh, he’s not getting whiffs and his velocity has dipped under 88 mph. I’m okay for the Indians and Tigers, but the White Sox? Absolutely not.
Michael Pineda – I’m 50/50 for the Cubs as he’s known as a volatile arm and his velocity dipped in his last start. I think I’m okay for the Reds, though.

Deivi Garcia – I expect Garcia to be better than his last outing and a start for most of these. If he struggles against the Jays, I wouldn’t repeat it the following week, nor Boston, but still for the Marlins. If he succeeds, he may have the momentum for Boston. Monitor this.
Gerrit Cole – Yes, come on.
Masahiro Tanaka – I’m good for all of this as well.
Jordan Montgomery – I’m torn, but leaning sit here. He doesn’t have his breakers and his fastball command has been off for two starts. If he kills it against the Orioles, I could be convinced to start against the Sawx after, then assess for the Jays to finish the year.

Zach Eflin – He’s currently sitting with 3 IP and 5 Ks with 1 ER against the Red Sox and I think that’s enough to start him against the Marlins next time, regardless of how this ends (watch me regret this later). No curveball, though, but basic Eflin should be fine in Miami. I’d likely sit for the rest, though, maybe let him loose for the Jays but I wouldn’t feel good about it.
Jake Arrieta – I’d feel icky starting him against the Marlins and I think that says a lot.
Spencer Howard – Maybe against the Marlins, but that’s it. He’s not complete yet as his changeup isn’t the pitch it needs to be yet.
Aaron Nola / Zack Wheeler – Always start and keep in mind that they may get shifted a little to get another start as they fight to keep their playoff spot – maybe a September 11th doubleheader start is Nola’s, for example.
Team Notes: So many doubleheaders and sadly two within four days of each other and starting after an off-day, messing everything up. It’s a lot of Vince Velasquez, I’m sure and I want none of it.

Chris Paddack – This is a tough one as his fastball hasn’t been good and you’re not starting him against the Dodgers. I’m in for the Angels but the hot Giants lineup? Not so sure.
Garrett Richards – Nope, we can call it quits now. A desperate last week stream against the Angels for the upside, but not worth it for those deep in the mix.

Marco Gonzales – He’s sporting a near 3.00 ERA with a sub 0.90 WHIP and I think you have to let him go against the A’s, sit for the Padres, and assess your options on the 26th.

Dakota Hudson – Even with his breakers not earning the whiffs I want these days, I think that schedule is too good to pass up.
Johan Oviedo – Sadly his stuff is too raw for me to trust he can take advantage of this schedule.
Team Notes: Like the Marlins, the Cardinals have many games to make up and they’ll use Austin Gomber, Daniel Ponce De Leon, and possibly others for these starts. The good news is their schedule is great regardless and while you won’t be starting these arms, you can keep the confidence with Waino/Hudson/etc.

Patrick Corbin – I’d sit for the Braves as his fastball command is out of whack. I imagine he can fix it for the Marlins and then would be a start against the Mets, but it’s sad you only have two games where you’d feel good starting Corbin right now.
Team Notes: There are a trio of doubleheaders as well, so monitor the starts. For the most part, it won’t get worse for Corbin and you’re starting Scherzer so it doesn’t matter a whole lot.
Conclusion

If you can pick and choose, I’d be rotating along.
Boyd for strikeout upside, Alcantara for overall ceiling, Hudson for ratios but low strikeouts, and Tanaka for overall floor.

That’s awfully close. Anderson is the balanced one, Hudson is the ratios/Wins focus, and Gausman is the strikeouts focus. Depends on what you need!

Definitely not Senz-A or Anibal or Milone.
I can see it working with Dean, but I think it hinges plenty on the Yankees start.
Brubaker is a bench but a consideration for this next three. Means only has three left now and I’m not sold his performance yesterday is going to stick w/ lower velocity and still a little lacking on his changeup.
I think I lean Means > Kremer > Brubaker, though. It’s very close.

Tough calls for me. Last in ERA in my AL roto. We have 4 man rotations and I have Montas, Luzardo, Civale, Pineda. Right now I’m just looking for win/k upside as ERA is lost. Would you drop Montas after this 2 start week for say Happ, Deivi, Singer or Urquidy? I’m debating trying to stream 2 start guys with some win potential. Looking at the schedule I’m also wondering if dropping Pineda makes sense.
Can we talk about it next week? We have to see how Deivi looks today + Singer against an easier opponent + if Urquidy gets his command back.
I understand the desire to drop Montas though, and it could be the way to go.
Looking at dropping Montas and trying to claim Deivi. With Montas not getting ks (afraid to use the Splitter) and having a 2nd start this weekend, he should only get 2 more starts (though in decent matchups). Of Pineda however has a start Sunday instead of 2 next week, he is a drop with that schedule and only 2 starts left.
What about handedness for team offense? For example, Dodgers blast RHP but are hitting .228/.324/.359, 91 wRC+ against LHP. It might be ok to start Luzardo and Heaney against the the Dodgers…
That may be something to consider and I’ll think about this for next week.
Ranking offenses is innately flawed to me as there is no excellent way of handling it. A month+ sample isn’t all that great.
Lugo over Corbin or Luzardo? I need quality innings most of all, I’m in WHIP purgatory.
Man that’s close, I think I still favor Luzardo, but Corbin really hasn’t been one to trust.
I’m going Lugo for all four, so if you have to pick one I guess it’s Lugo. I can’t believe I’m saying that.
Luzardo has the two best starts, though. If you can pick and choose, I’d emphasize those two starts vs. Seattle.
Add Brady Singer or Dakota Hudson?

Valdez or musgrove for the week 8 and 9? (Semifinal and final)
Musgrove was solid, but still on a limited pitch count. I think I’d favor Valdez’s easy schedule and hope that curveball comes back vs. Arizona and Seattle.
Thoughts please on using Kim for the Cardinals once he’s back from the IR?
Good point! I should have mentioned that.
I’d imagine however he slides into the rotation, I’d be comfortable starting him…after his first start. It’s a super easy schedule for the Cardinals. I’d be cautious the first start though, as they usually come with a limited pitch count.

Hello. Love your stuff. Have the playoffs next week. From what I read Pineda should be a streamer not to keep him. Is that correct? Is Pablo Lopez a good stream on Mon after last night?
I looked this over and available guys (Mahle, Urias, Gonsolin, Montas) do not appear to have a good slate next week for the semis. Any 2 start guys I may be overlooking next week?

I know I’m not Nick but I think you have to consider Lugo vs TB. They K a lot and made Kickham look like an Ace. He seems stretched out now too so should be able to go 6 if he doesn’t get into trouble and I could see a 6-8 k game

Hey, so like you, I was pretty pumped for Boyd’s ROS following 3 straight good outings and his remaining schedule. But then the implosion vs the Brewers… so I took a closer look at his ROS schedule and I no longer think it’s as great as we initially thought. Whit, Salvy and Dozier have crushed Boyd over the years (check out their career numbers against him) and Dozier in general mashes lefties. Mondesi also seems to have turned it around as of late. This with Boyd’s known implosion risks really makes me think he isn’t worth keeping around for his final 3 starts (although I still like his start against Cleveland). Thoughts?
