Welcome to The List – The weekly top 100 rankings of starting pitchers in fantasy baseball for the rest of the season. Use this list to help make choices on the waiver wire and as a tool to gauge trade value in your fantasy leagues. These rankings are made with 5×5 H2H standard 12-team leagues in mind.

Let’s talk about how the SP landscape has changed since last week:

  • Here are this week’s relevant injuries: Chris Sale is out until this weekend – not enough for a change – Stephen Strasburg’s timetable is still super confusing and take his spot with a grain of salt, Lance McCullers’ timetable is still an unknown, while the same goes for Alex Wood and Carlos Martinez. Then there’s Ross Stripling returning into the rotation with Wood injured, giving him a massive rise. Meanwhile, Yu Darvish, Michael Fulmerand Eduardo Rodriguez are still off The List completely as their timetables are questionable and they are not Top 20 assets.
  • Robbie Ray and Kenta Maeda each had a small drop as they each have hit bumps in the road. I think Ray is actually prime for a strong finish and I believe in Maeda’s whiff rates, but there’s also Miles Mikolas improving his strikeouts, Masahiro Tanaka looking great, and Rich Hill taking advantage of his time on the…bump, so I had to bring them down.
  • As promised, Trevor Cahill and Derek Holland each saw large jumps this week as they are two of my favorite discount adds in 12-teamers. Zack Godley joins them in the Top 60 as well, though that mark is based on his much higher ceiling while currently holding a lower floor than the other two.
  • The Great Regression of 2018 is hitting Jon Lester hard as he falls once again. His teammates Jose Quintana and Cole Hamels are looking better, however, and could finish strong.
  • Joining The List this week are Lance Lynn (rotation spot for the Yanks), Trevor Richards (increased changeup usage!), Matt Boyd (slight uptick in velocity), Homer Bailey (recent surge), and Lucas Giolito (improved velocity/command).
  • Making room are Sonny Gray (demoted to pen), Steven Matz (injury), Felix Pena (terrible performances), Tyler Mahle (demoted), and Frankie Montas (not enough upside to chase).

  1. Hewitt says:

Hey Nick, love the work you do!

I know you’ve put off putting up the List in the past because you want to put together a quality product, but how long would you say you spend curating the List every week? Must be a lot with all the other stuff you do for the site.

    Love what you do!

    • Nick Pollack says:

Well, it would have been up about an hour earlier, but I accidentally deleted it in a perfect storm of failure.

Normally it takes a good 3-4 hours. Sometimes a little faster, but generally around there. I like to make an edition, then polish through it again.

Writing the roundups through the week makes it plenty easier to keep tabs on everything.

      • MIKE GAYLIN says:

Thanks for the look in “behind the scenes”….you are awesome!

It is well worth the wait and it makes Mondays a little more tolerable.

  2. Ryan says:

I know it isn’t your column, but is the plate discipline weekly article dead?

    • Nick Pollack says:

It is for the time being. I love the work Chaz has done and hopefully when he has the time again to write, we’ll be seeing its return :)

  3. Steve says:

Would you move Fiers up more now that he’s with Oakland?

    • Nick Pollack says:

I’d actually move him down because his Tigers’ schedule was as incredible as they come prior to the deal.

      • Jim says:

Assuming every 5 days with Oakland first 5 GS should be: vLAD, vSEA, vTEX, @MIN, vSEA

Four at home represent a nice park upgrade, and his road start also at a very favorable park vs an average offense. I’m totally buying, dude.

  4. Josh says:

Why the -2 for Dereck Rodriguez?

    • Nick Pollack says:

Low strikeout rate + I’m liking a few other guys more.

Last night was great though! No Altuve/Springer/Correa, but still great!

  5. Bbboston says:

    Genuine question:

How does Mike Minor go down when he’s pitching lights out for 4 weeks and you wrote about him as a cheap sleeper? I love your rankings, regardless!

    • Nick Pollack says:

Sure thing, I’m impressed by his Astros start, but not so much by his Orioles start because, well, it’s the Orioles. I wrote him as a cheap streaming option and it’s the 80/90s where guys are going to move a lot week-to-week. I don’t see Minor as a rosterable option, so he’ll be floating there each week.

Don’t look at the movement here like it’s a statement from me.

  6. eric says:

Cahill or Holland ROS. Why so much faith in Ray ROS? His K-BB% is 14.3 and xFIP 4.02. Thanks.

    • Nick Pollack says:

      Hey!

With Ray, it’s because I’m seeing the skills come together after he needed to shake off the rust when returning from the DL.

With guys in the TOp 40/50, it’s important not to look at all of his past performances to dictate what will happen. It’s about him getting into his groove to excel moving forward. I’ve seen better things from Ray in his last three starts – curveball usage is back up – and I’m encouraged we’ll see him rebound in the closing weeks.

Cahill slightly, which is why he’s one spot higher.

  7. Joe says:

Where would you rank Flaherty and Castillo on dynasty lists? Do you get a feeling that 2018 Flaherty is a bit of a trap for future like 2017 Castillo was?

  8. Garrett Linville says:

    Hey Nick,

Thank you for the writeups you put together. I always appreciate the time and effort.

My league is a shallow (6-man) Head to Head, points league. One of our teams has Skaggs, and Robbie Ray up for trade. What value should I be seeking out for someone on my team like Mccullers/Hammels? Should I even consider trading or should I hold onto my two guys?

This would be a counter trade after he offered me, Judge, Ray, Skaggs for Hoskins, and Didi.

  9. Dr. Nira Cain-N’Degeocello says:

What do you make of Kingham’s recent rough patch and subsequent demotion?
