Welcome to The List – The weekly top 100 rankings of starting pitchers in fantasy baseball for the rest of the season. Use this list to help make choices on the waiver wire and as a tool to gauge trade value in your fantasy leagues. These rankings are made with 5×5 H2H standard 12-team leagues in mind.

Let’s talk about how the SP landscape has changed since last week:

  • Here are this week’s relevant injuries: Stephen Strasburg’s timetable is still super confusing and take his spot with a grain of salt, Lance McCullers is out until September, while Carlos Martinez may not start again this season and return out of the pen. Then there’s CC Sabathia out for possibly just one start, Tyler Skaggs‘ DL situation well up in the air, and the trio of Yu Darvish, Michael Fulmerand Eduardo Rodriguez are still off The List completely as their timetables are questionable and they are not Top 20 assets.
  • I want to note that after Rick Porcellothere is a noticeable tier drop starting with Chris Archer and it gets real hazy real fast. It’s why someone like Marco Gonzales can drop 19 spots so quickly. It’s not that he’s actually all too different, it’s that his previous spot wasn’t so good in actuality given how close everything was.
  • I’m sure all of you are sick and tired of #Dodgeritis like I am with Ross Stripling and Kenta Maeda demoted to the bullpen. I have to think Stripling and/or Maeda return to the rotation in two-three weeks – when have you ever heard of a Dodgers rotation being stable – so I left them on as stashes as they are both Top 40 starters with locked rotation spots.
  • I’m not liking how Andrew Heaney has suddenly stopped inducing whiffs once again. I’m hoping he can return to it, but this has been an over-arching problem for a little bit. Focus on his changeup during this two-start week.
  • Lance Lynn has impressed mightily as a member of the Yankee rotation with a decent schedule ahead as well. I don’t expect his glistening K/BB to continue, but he’s definitely worth the roster spot these days.
  • I’m amazed to find myself adding Tyler Glasnowbut with his current hot streak as a starter for the Rays – and very few exciting options out there – he returns with a relatively high rank.
  • Plenty of starters joined The List this week. Edwin Jackson and Ryan Borucki get an add despite their current runs looking plenty unsustainable. Jacob Nix gets a spot after a solid debut, while Touki Toussaint gets an add, though he will probably be sent down to the minors after today’s spot start. Sean Rein-Foley makes his debut tonight against the Royals and could stick around after, Anthony DeSclafani returns as his slider has recently been much improved, Sam Gaviligo changed his mix in his last start to feature more breaking balls and it could stick, Reynaldo Lopez returns after a promising outing against the Yankees, and Pablo Lopez is showing a repertoire that could return form into a successful approach.

Is Hyun-Jin Ryu outside of the top 100?

  2. Scott says:

How did eovaldi go up after his implosion vs the O’s? I’d expect him to fall due to his risk of those kind of starts. This is his 3rd hard to recover from the damage done kind of start since end of june.

I’m so sick of seeing Scherzer ahead of Sale… It’s a joke. Sale has a better ERA, WHIP, I haven’t checked in a couple days, but I believe Sale still has more K/9… Sale just struck out 12 in 5 innings giving up one hit on 68 pitches no walks all while coming off an injury.. a minor one, but still an injury that caused missed starts.. Sale pitches in the AL and let’s be honest when looking at his 12-4 record in his 23 appearances and not forget that he got absolutely no love from his offense the first couple months and took no decisions and loses that he didn’t deserve in terms of his quality of pitching.. but just forget that for now and as it stands, he is the best pitcher in baseball and I’m tired of seeing him getting fucked.. Hands down he should be given the CY young, no question.. but knowing baseball like I do, he will not lose a game the rest of the year, strike out an average of 10/start, go undefeated in the playoffs, and pitch a complete game to win the World Series, and they will give the CY Young to Verlander or someone who didn’t even make the ALCS.. I have a feeling he’s going to impress even more from here on out.. and if he does all that, he should get MVP too, but that’s a tough argument with Mookie and JD. So, Nick, I want to hear a intelligent, well thought out thesis as to why Scherzer is #1…

    • Derek says:

Scherzer has more innings, Ks, QS, wins, CG, and the ERA and WHIP are about the same. Scherzer also has the longer track record and has done nothing to lose his hold on number 1, even though it is virtually a tie. At any rate, they’re both going to win the Cy Young and being ranked the number 2 pitcher instead of 1 is far from getting “fucked.”

Easy there champ… this isn’t really a piss and moan crowd and I don’t think you are going to get too far with this type of post here.. except from my dumb ass. May I suggest fangraphs or reddit? You sound angry – Twitter might be up your alley. There are a bunch of people in those communities that just like to argue. This really is a civil group but maybe you can start a war in some other corner of the internet.

  4. hscer says:

And if these were being done today instead of yesterday, Sevi would rank…15th?

  5. J.C. Mosier says:

6 Aug version of the list still showing in the right-hand site border.

  6. Frankie says:

Mike Leake has been a QS machine, yet his ranking is among those that barely deserve top 100 status; R Lopez, Tony Disco, et al. Honestly, Leake has been one of the most useful SPs in QS leagues since the break — even before then. 8 QS in his last 10 starts! (1 Win in those same 10 GS.) What?! I know. Kill the Win.

    • Nick Pollack says:

Wins are dumb, I’m with you. Hopwever, The List is written for Win leagues not QS, and Leake’s ~4.00 with a 15% K rate is pretty blegh.

  7. scott says:

Why is Trevor Williams not Top 100? or am I just missing hisname?
