Today we will take look at the updated non-closer reliever market as there are some changes to the list since our previous installment. Keep in mind, just because a player is ranked below another player (especially when in the same tier), that doesn’t mean you need to rush to drop them for a higher ranked player. These rankings are mostly to be used on a tier by tier scale and apply towards the pitcher’s value for the rest of the season.
- Some notable names rising up the list include Kenta Maeda, who should be the primary set up option in front of Kenley Jansen the rest of the season. Greg Holland’s pitched well enough with the Nationals (16 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 8 BB, 18 K) to earn a steady set up role, and could even see some more save chances if the team plays it cautiously with Sean Doolittle. Blake Parker looks to be fading into more of a setup role with the rise of recently required rookie Ty Buttrey but should still retain SV+HD league value. Richard Rodriguez figures to finally see some consistent set up work now that Keone Kela is likely out for the season. Brad Ziegler is in the mix to close out some games now, and should at least be a consistent holds mix moving forward with Brad Boxberger and Archie Bradley struggling lately.
- Brad Ziegler and Jonny Venters were the only relievers to pick up 4 holds this week. Venters is the latest Braves reliever to make a splash in the holds department, and despite the respectable numbers on the year (2.67, 1.09 and 25 K’s over 30.1 IP), isn’t likely to see many 2+ hold weeks to finish off the season.
Andrew Miller is off the DL, where should he be tiered?
Good catch, knew I was missing someone. His first two outings have been great, and he should start seeing more work later in games as we get closer to October.
Noticed Corey Knebel didn’t make an appearance in the rankings? He’s been pitching well since his return. What are your thoughts on him?
He’ll be on tomorrow’s list. He was with Jeffress as a co-closer this week, and I’m sure the Brewers would prefer to use him in the 9th again, with Jeffress and Hader working the 7th/8th innings again. In standard 12 teamers, he’s a fringy guy to own right now, but in SV+HD leagues he will have value.

Rick, let’s talk about Maeda. #16? I know that since he’s been converted to the pen, the opportunities he’s gotten have mostly been in the late innings in high leverage situations. I also recognize that his ratios and stats are tolerable (K+ per IP, low walks, acceptable WHIP, meh ERA). My problem is that he hasn’t pitched that much (9 IP in last 30 days). The conspiracy theory about the Dodgers manipulating his innings pitched looms large. Why is he ranked that high? I want to keep him as his SP eligibility is very valuable. He worked as the teams closer in Colorado with Jansen out so they clearly trust him in high leverage spots. Madson has continued to pitch poorly since coming over from Washington, and there only other valuable option in the 7th/8h innings right is Alexander. I know the Dodgers want to be conservative but they are fighting for a playoff spot right now with a team that’s built to win now. They’d be wise to use him to get to Jansen as much as possible down the stretch.
Also, 9 innings in 30 days isn’t too crazy. Jose Alvarado has only worked 9.2 innings the last 30 days and still has more SV+HD than anyone over that span.
