Today we will take look at the updated non-closer reliever market as there are some changes to the list since our previous installment. Keep in mind, just because a player is ranked below another player (especially when in the same tier), that doesn’t mean you need to rush to drop them for a higher ranked player. These rankings are mostly to be used on a tier by tier scale and apply towards the pitcher’s value for the rest of the season.
- Lou Trivino and Seung Hwan-Oh were among the biggest risers on the list this week. Trivino has settled into that 8th inning set up role in front of Blake Treinen quite nicely (with a shiny 15.5 SwStr% to boot), and the duo has been among the best 8th/9th inning shutdown combos in baseball. Oh has been the Blue Jays most consistent reliever to date and seems locked into a setup role at least until Roberto Osuna returns.
- The biggest fallers inside the top 50 this week were Ryan Madson and Anthony Swarzak. Madson has been bumped from the 8th inning by Kelvin Herrera and with Brandon Kintzler returning and other relievers in that bullpen pitching well, he’s far from guaranteed that secondary set up role. Swarzak has been a disaster since coming off the DL and has been outpitched by the likes of Tim Peterson, who happened to work the 8th in a save situation last night.
- Tyler Clippard, Scott Alexander, Amir Garrett, Yoshi Hirano and Aaron Loup all had 3 HD’s this past week. Alexander is a name in particular who I think can rise quickly up this list. He’s been great as the team’s late-inning lefty specialist since Tony Cingrani hit the DL, especially over the past two weeks where he has 5 holds, 8 strikeouts and a 2.35/1.04 ERA/WHIP over 7.2 innings.
Where’s Minter?
Currently closing for the Braves. He’ll be on tomorrow’s SV+HD list.
Brad Peacock is incredibly frustrating. He’s pitching extremely well, but 3 HD in the last month just doesn’t cut it. Maybe Houston is just too good, because outside of Devenski, none of their relievers have impressive save or hold figures. Houston is just 22nd in SVHD, 25th in SV, 20th in HD, and 20th in SVHD situations. Morton is suffering from the same problem.
What is Strahm’s situation? Fantasy irrelevant despite the nice performances lately because he starts, but doesn’t pitch long enough to get the W, and relieves inconsistently?
Peacock is frustrating in the holds department, but still rock solid for low ratios and K’s and rarely ever hurts you like some of the names below him.
I still think Strahm winds up back in the rotation at some point, it only makes sense for the Padres to see what they have in Strahm as a full-time starter.
Collin McHugh has been even better in relief this year. Yet nary even a hold…
