The Hold Up 4/18: Ranking the Top 90 Relievers for Holds Every Thursday

Rick Graham ranks the top pitchers to own for holds.

  • Trevor May is the biggest faller this week as he drops 23 spots after a tumultuous week. Obviously, the 5.14 ERA and 1.57 WHIP aren’t what owners were looking for when drafting May, but it’s the fact he only has one hold to his name that drops him this far. He hasn’t been trusted in many high leverage situations from the get-go, and his recent outings will likely keep him down toward the bottom of the pecking order for now.
  • While it’s typically impossible to predict how Gabe Kapler is going to use his bullpen, the one constant is that Adam Morgan will work against left-handers late in close games. Assuming he is getting the job done, as he has so far, this should lead to bunches of hold/save chances for Morgan, the biggest riser on the list this week.
  • In injury-related news, Dellin Betances and David Robertson were removed because of their presumed lengthy IL stints. Neither one is worth owning unless you have an open IL spot. Kyle Crick was reinstated from the IL earlier in the week and should see steady setup work with Keone Kela and to a lesser degree Richard Rodriguez struggling.

Going with all reliever strategy in H2H categories saves plus holds on yahoo. Would it be a mistake to drop Buttrey for Gant to put him in SP slot with Castillo

    • Rick Graham says:

Good idea, but I think I’d still be hanging on to Buttrey.

    • Scott says:

What is Stanek’s role when not opening. I’m interested in using him in a daily lineup league for ratio, it’s. He’s been good but if he got holds that would be gravy. Thanks

I really like Stanek but needed to drop him as he’s opening too many games at the moment. He usually opens one and then available for relief in one of the other four games (in between starts). If he sticks near the back end full time he’d be a must add in holds leagues…

  2. Perfect Game says:

Where would you rank Jeffries for saves now that he’s back and assuming Kimbrel signs elsewhere?

    • Rick Graham says:

If we’re talking saves only, I’d probably have him early 20’s. Hader will still vulture some saves.

  3. Dan says:

Seranthony only has 2 holds on the year and seems like he gets passed up a lot when opportunities arise. I believe in the talent, but it’s incredibly frustrating to own. You think I should stick it out and that his opportunities are coming?

  4. Matt says:

I am giving it 2 weeks until Trivino is second on this list

He gets late inning work when not opening. So far he has 2 holds in 4 relief appearances. It would be nice to see him not open anymore, but he’s still got some value.

  6. Kyle says:

    Hey Rick,
Thoughts on Nick Anderson? 17Ks and 2 walks over 8 innings, but pitching for a bad Marlins team will limit his holds. Do you think he’s worth owning for the ratios, and do you see this success continuing?

    • hardcourt says:

In my opinion both he and Tayron Guerrero should be given 7th ot 9th inning holds/save opportunities as Conley, Steckinridge and Romo have not done the job. Hopefully, we see that soon…

  7. Hi says:

Good work on the rankings. I think Nick burdi is too low though.

  8. Jim says:

Biagini and Jeffress can immediately swap places.
