The 5 Best MLB Moments From Saturday

The beachball, my friend, is blowin' in the wind

As a Yankees fan, I have been very happy to have this excuse to put on at least four other, non-Yankees games every week on my main monitor to spare me the indignity of watching them lose in a new and somehow even more excruciating fashion seemingly every night. And I’m also happy that you, dear reader, are here to come on the adventure of what I find along with me.

Balling Out Of Control

Usually, when you get an on-field delay like this, it’s because of something more malicious and/or naked:

But, thankfully, in Cincinnati yesterday it was just a mislaid beach ball taking a wild ride on the breeze at Great American.

And while on some level I question the wisdom and intent of bringing any type of large inflatable to a baseball game, Ozzie Albies’ reaction makes up for it. I feel like I haven’t seen that many Atlanta games this year and I missed that smile.

Big league hustle by the ballboy, too.

(Retractable) Shade

The weather got really heavy in Chicago on Saturday afternoon:

And long story short, the Mariners at White Sox game had to be postponed in the third inning. But the M’s weren’t content to just watch the rain hitting the hotel room windows, they wanted to get in a jab.

Having been to T-Mobile Park and really, really loving it, I have to say I’m with Seattle on this one. A world with no rainouts would be pretty cool.

Jacob deNice

We all know that Jacob deGrom is amazing and that he’s having an amazing year, but did you realize just how nice 2021 has been for him?

Innuendo aside, whenever you’re doing X for the first time since some dude with a dodgy nationality-based nickname, you know it’s a big deal for better or worse. A lot of people spent time talking about how Mike Trout was “too underrated” by baseball fans (which was true for a bit but definitely hasn’t been for a long time) but I feel like we’re only just now coming around to truly appreciate just how incredibly good deGrom is. Which I realize is ridiculous but also: is it? I mean, deGrom is crazy good.

Tatistans

And speaking of fan favorites, let’s shoot on over to SoCal to check in on El Niño:

I mean, sure it’s not Fernando Tatís Jr. hitting three dingers in a game or anything, but the long run to catch the pop-up seamlessly into high-fiving a fan? That’s still crisp stuff.

Upon Review: Sick Moustache

Tonight’s facial hair spotlight isn’t a player or even an umpire, it’s the guy who hauls around the replay gear in SD:

I guess if your job absolutely guarantees you’re gonna be on TV, it is in your best interest to grow a sweet ‘stache.

I feel your Yankee pain, Asher. It’s excruciating. Cole and the offense today is… not quite bringing me to NY Post-level criticism, but it’s getting there.
