Starting Pitcher Streamer Rankings – 7/30 & 7/31

Nick Pollack ranks the starting pitcher streamers for today & tomorrow.

Every day of the 2022 baseball season, I’ll be looking at today and tomorrow’s slate of scheduled starting pitchers and ranking their matchups for your fantasy baseball streams.

There’s a lot that goes into this and you can hang out with me on Twitch.tv/pitcherlist to talk about the specific ranks as I make them every weekday morning from 9am – 11am ET. If you have questions about these ranks, please ask during the morning Twitch AMA. Those are my office hours as I generally don’t answer comments on the site.

There are four tiers to these rankings with 12-teamers in mind:

Auto-Start – Just do it. Don’t overthink this, start the man.

Probably Start – I’m likely starting these arms, though I recognize there is more risk than we’d like there to be. Either it’s a tough matchup for a good pitcher or a weak lineup for a volatile arm.

Questionable Start – There are situations where I’d take the chance, either with strong enough upside on the ability side, or a poor offense that a pitcher could take advantage of.

Do Not Start – The reward is not worth the risk. Don’t do it.

Obviously, there will be circumstances where pitchers should move between teams for your situation specifically and these new tiers should act as a little more help than the straight table from last year.

Please keep in mind that streaming is far from a perfect play. In fact, if they work out over half the time, I’d consider it a success. These matchup rankings & streamer picks are going to be wildly different than the actual results throughout the year, so please, have sympathy before the scathing comments and tweets. I’m only trying to help!

Make sure to read the notes if you’re wondering why I’m favoring certain pitchers over others – I won’t get to everyone and hopefully I answer what questions you will have.

There is a second table for tomorrow’s starting pitcher matchups as well, helping everyone get a jump on their nightly pickups. Please note that these matchups are subject to change, though, and there will be times when I have the incorrect pitcher going. I thank you for your future understanding.

Finally, there are my streaming picks of the day, and please keep in mind that I am forced to pick a streamer every day. Those highlighted in Green are in the second tier and I’d roll with them everywhere. The most common are those in Yellow in the third tier and should be decent if you’re searching for something on a given day. Finally, those are Red are those I really don’t want to start (they are labeled as “Do Not Start”, after all) but have no other choice. Don’t stream these guys until you are truly desperate. A streaming pick is defined as “rostered in 20% or fewer leagues,” which really emphasizes the point that I’d be happy if over 50% of these worked. I could do the whole sub 30/40% rostered, but there’s no fun in that. You can use the rankings to realize who would be those picks, instead.

(Opener) – Outlines that a pitcher is being opened for that day & the pitcher listed will follow the opener.

As I do my rankings, I thought it would be helpful to showcase a table of how we’re ranking offenses. Dave Swan does an incredible job of showcasing future SP matchups every 2-3 weeks in this article, and I’ve elected to use his offense ranks to share with all of you here:

Nick’s Loose Team Offense Rankings (Updated 7/13)

I’m sure it’ll change through the year + there are differences to be made about teams vs. LHP or RHP, but it’s a great general table that y’all should keep in mind.

Alright, let’s get to it.

2022 Streamer Record: 60-46

Today’s Starting Pitcher Rankings

  • The top tier is as iffy as you’ll see in these ranks, with Joe Musgrove at the top despite facing the mighty Twins offense. Let’s hope Byron Buxton has a day off.
  • Clayton Kershaw also has a difficult night ahead as he heads to Coors. I understand those that see Coors and run for the hills, but it’s Kershaw. The probability of success outweighs the relatively high floor he brings.

  • The second tier feels more at home. Sonny Gray and Carlos Carrasco aren’t facing the toughest lineups, making it easy to slot into your Saturday lineups.
  • I know, Tyler Mahle is pitching at home. He isn’t destined to falter inside Great American Ballpark and as his likely final outing in the stadium this year, I think he’s worth the play against the middling Orioles lineup. The strikeouts are still there, after all.

  • The third tier is filled to the brim with your Toby types with great matchups. Corey Kluber should be fine against the Guardians, Johnny Cueto’s magic has a good chance of lingering against the Athletics, Ross Stripling faces the worst offense in the league against right-handers, and even Zach Plesac gets a cushy matchup where his slider/change can thrive.
  • Don’t overlook Ranger Suárezwho has lowered his ERA to sub 4.00 levels as he’s getting whiffs on his changeup once again + nailing the edges with his new cutter. A date with the Pirates may turn a whole lot of heads.

  • Update: The Orioles pushed Dean Kremer to Saturday, making him the streaming pick of the day today, not Mitch KellerHe’s pitched well enough over the last month to deserve the pick.

  • The Do Not Start tier…oh dear this tier. There are so many names here and I understand many of you will be digging through this to find something, but let me tell you right now, you’re playing with fire. I didn’t place them in this tier for nothing. Let me break this down as best as I can.
  • Eric Lauer is a Cherry Bomb against a still solid offense. Jakob Junis isn’t fully stretched out despite getting the Cubs + his slider is all he has. Nick Pivetta’s best days are behind him. Drew Smyly had a great curve last time and it likely doesn’t stick.

  • Soooooo yeah. That’s a rough day of pitching and be careful if you’re chasing anything in that bottom tier. It’s a minefield and you may be better off chasing arms on Saturday and Sunday instead.

  • The top tier is filled with the normal studs and while it feels weird to see Pablo López sixth after his dominant performance last week, take a look at the matchups for the five guys above him. The studs have it good on Sunday.
  • Speaking of which, José Berríos has it as good as it can be against the Tigers and it elevates him to the top tier, despite not being the consistent arm you envisioned on draft day. If you have Berríos and not starting him against Detroit, what’s the point?

  • Ending the tier is Taijuan Walkerfacing a mediocre Marlins crew. He’s been incredibly solid and I’d be shocked to find a manager holding back Walker.
  • I elected to kick off the second tier with Jordan Montgomery and Merrill Kellytwo arms flirting with a 3.00 ERA who should be fine to go Sunday.

  • I had a hard time ranking Nick Lodolo and Reid Detmersultimately deciding who the streaming pick of the day was going to be. I went with Lodolo due to Detmers still struggling to get whiffs on his slider + the Rangers being a touch more difficult than the Orioles, even in GABP.

  • The third tier begins with a pair of arms who could enter the second tier or even the first if they had better matchups. Tony Gonsolin recently stumbled and now has to face Coors, while Aaron Ashby had a promising seven inning, 111-pitch outing but may take a step back against the Red Sox.
  • The bottom pair are Dane Dunning and Jake Odorizzi facing easier squads. Dunning’s command was excellent last time out and the Angels are floundering as much as anyone. Odorizzi took a step back in his last two starts, but could recover for the Mariners.

  • In the bottom tier, it may be a surprise to see both Sean Manaea and George Kirby present, but it’s for good reason. Manaea hasn’t had his secondaries for a bit and now faces the tough Twins offense, while we shouldn’t overlook that Kirby was limited to near 50 pitches last time. It grants a capped ceiling with an already low floor facing the Astros.
  • JT Brubaker and Adrian Sampson are solid dart throws if you’re looking for some Sunday magic. Coffee Cakes could have his breakers against a volatile Phillies squad, while Sampson has moments where he’s able to carve lineups and the Giants aren’t as looming as their name suggests.
