Reliever Rankings 4/14: Top 100 Relief Pitchers For Saves + Holds Leagues

After going over individual Saves and Holds rankings the past two days, today we bring you the combo list. I definitely tend to value save opportunities still much more over holds, as we saw last year, the top 15 saves leaders had more saves than all but 1 set up guy had holds (Addison Reed just killed it). That being said, ratios and K rates obviously play a huge factor into fantasy baseball so I tried to adjust accordingly.

Notes

• With regards to the Rangers bullpen debacle, I think the only 2 who need to be owned right now are Matt Bush and Tony Barnette. Wednesday night made the situation a bit more clear, with Jeremy Jeffress pitching the 7th and Barnette getting loose in the top of the 9th with (at the time) a 3 run lead. It still would be tough to see them pass on Bush, but his lack of closer experience and durability/health concern could leave him in a set up role. By next week the situation should become a lot more clear. Sam Leclerc isnt an option yet despite his fluke save Wednesday, but is worth keeping an eye on. He definitely has late inning stuff.
• For those in these Save+Holds leagues, I think Sean Doolittle and Santiago Casilla both get a little bump. They should be both see hold and save opportunities, while Ryan Madson should pick up double digit holds as well. Ryan Dull seems like the odd man out for holds in Oakland now.
• While he has been passed over for the closers role, Hector Neris is still the ideal Philly reliever to own here. He still very well may get a chance to earn some saves in the second half, and his overall value should make him just as if not more useful than Joaquin Benoit.
• If I had to guess, I’d say the Braves, Tigers and Padres are the next three teams to make a change at closer. Arodys Vizcaino is due a shot at the role and given a chance to run with the job. Jim Johnson should interest some teams near the trade deadline as a solid veteran set-up man. I really hope no playoff contender considers him a closer candidate (looking at you Texas).
• Fransisco Rodriguez just really looks worn down. His changeup still has nasty movement to it and can be deceptive, but the problem is hitters should be able to make adjustments as the season goes on due to the only 4 MPH difference in his changeup and fastball (87 to 83). Justin Wilson is the obvious next in line answer, and if K-Rod blows up sooner rather than later, Wilson will probably be the guy. Joe Jimenez is still my favorite to end the season as the teams closer. His fastball/slider combo is just flat out filthy.
• I hope for fantasy purposes for everyone, Carter Capps can come back healthy and take over as the closer in San Diego. He is just fun to watch and I’d love to see him in that 9th inning role full time for the first time in his career.
