It’s only fair to start off Godley’s writeups by mentioning his windup and release. How he falls off the mound with always effect the repitition of his release, which will effect his control on all of his pitches. While Godley hit the zone at a career-high 43.2%, his SwStr% and O-Swing% dropped, which caused the K% on the pitch to drop to 27.6%, the first time it has been below 40% in his career.

Godley’s cutter hit a career-high 44.9% FB%, which was helped out by a 40.9% IFFB%. He still struggled to throw the pitch for strikes consistently, putting up a 13.2% BB%.

Godley’s sinker’s ground-ball rate fell below 50% for the first time in his career, hitting 43.5%. In turn, the line drive rate and the HR/FB% increased, which led to a .429 wOBA.

For all of Godley’s pitches, it should be noted that his motion puts the repeatability of all his pitches into question. Godley increased the use on his knuckle curve in 2018 and it became his primary pitch. The pitch ranked as the third best curveball per pVal at 12.9 and was a Money Pitch, having a 38.2 Zone%, a 43.9 O-swing%, and a 18.4 K%. Godley’s best pitch also produced a 40.7 K% and a .192 BAA.

Godley struggled with the control of his sinker (10.7 BB%), despite raising his Zone% to 51.7. The pitch also got hit pretty hard, allowing a .305 BAA and a .366 wOBA. The sinker also lost a tick and a half, bringing its average velocity down to 89.9 mph.

Of the 59 pitchers who threw a cutter and pitched >120 innings, Godley’s ranked dead last with a -10.2 pVal. The next closest was Matt Moore, with a -6.5 pVal. With that motion, he struggled to throw the pitch for strikes. The pitch went from having a 56.1 Zone% in 2016 to a 41.3 Zone% in 2018, which resulted in the BB% essentially doubling to 17.3% from 2017. It also got hit pretty hard, allowing a .346 BAA and a .419 wOBA.

Godley’s changeup was only thrown about 5% of the time, so while it’s not a major part of his repertoire, it has some potential. Like with the rest of his pitches, throwing the changeup for strikes was an issue (29.8 Zone%). He managed to get a 16.5 SwStr%, but it didn’t fully translate to his 19.4 K%. On the batted ball front, the pitch had a .214 BAA en route to a -1.1 pVal.
