Carle threw his changeup in the zone just 27.9% of the time in 2019, but gave up all of his base hits (including one home run) when he did. Even so, it managed to be his best pitch by SwStr% at 14.0%, thanks in part to a 35.5% O-Swing rate.
At 1.5, Carle’s curveball was his only positive pitch by pVAL. It only averaged 81.1 mph and largely fell under the zone with a 30.6% zone rate, but was responsible for nine strikeouts to two walks and zero hits.
Carle’s fastball averaged 94.6 mph and usually targeted the outside edge of the plate. Batters held off when it was close, with the pitch receiving just a 19.4% O-Swing, and made contact when it was in the zone, as evidenced by its 94.4% Z-Contact rate. These were dramatic steps back from its 2018 numbers, and led to its pVAL dropping from 5.3 to -2.4.
Carle decreased his slider usage dramatically in 2019 from 25% to 13.4%, and saw its effectiveness fall as well. It failed to record a single whiff in 2019, alongside an 18.8% O-Swing rate. Its velocity jumped 2 mph to 88.9, but saw its movement decline, potentially explaining its decreased deception and resulting -1.9 pVAL.
