Rodriguez has only thrown six changeups over the course of his career. Perhaps trying to incorporate it more into his repertoire, he added four inches of horizontal break to it from 2018 to 2019.
Rodriguez’s fastball is like a dart. In the 94th percentile of spin rate, he uses it to own the top of the strikezone. However, throwing it 85% of the time is a bit outrageous, and Rodriguez could benefit from mixing in some of his offspeed offerings more often.
Rodriguez should make more room for this slider in his repertoire. In reality, the vaunted Pirates braintrust has worked with him to lower his slider usage in each of the past three seasons (34.2%, 24.8%, 14.2% respectively) amid elite strikeout numbers in 2018 (40.0%) and 2019 (35.9%). I have a feeling we might see this pitch’s usage tick up in 2020.
