While Goody greatly improved his Zone% on his fastball in 2019 (40.8% to 54.3%), the walk rate got worse – dropping to a career worst 16.3%.
Goody’s bread and butter was his slider, which came just short of being a “Money Pitch” (36.2% Zone%). The slider managed a 41.8% K% and 30.4% IFFB%.
Goody only threw 11.2 innings last year. In that very short sample, his fastball allowed just a .222 batting average but was hit hard to the tune of a .380 wOBA and an average exit velocity of 90.5 mph. Goody’s fastball sits at just over 91 mph, so location is crucial. As his 8.5% swinging-strike rate in 2017 demonstrates, it’s not a pitch that will garner too many swings and misses.
Goody’s slider showed above-average drop at 40 inches, three more than the league average. Going back to 2017, it’s been a very effective whiff pitch with a 42.4% chase rate and 24.2% swinging-strike rate.
