James leaned on his four-seamer heavily during his brief 2018 stint throwing it just about 60% of the time (209 total fastballs across 23 IP). He has quite the fastball averaging 97.1 mph and topping out at 101.1 mph. It had an 11.0% swinging-K rate (21.2% whiff rate) and limited hitters to a .282 wOBA and .192 batting average.
At 23.2%, the changeup was James’s second-most thrown pitch. He threw it an almost equal split against both righties and lefties. At 88.5 mph it has excellent differential of his average fastball velocity of 97 mph. It had an excellent 47.5% chase rate and 22.2% swinging-K rate (45% whiff rate) while limiting hitters to just a .186 wOBA and .158 batting average.
James’s third pitch, the slider, showed above-average horizontal movement away from righties at 10 inches (six inches was league average) and just about average drop. It had a 62.5% whiff rate across a very short 53-pitch sample.
