Still working out the pitch’s kinks, Ruiz upped his changeup usage from 3.4 to 13.3% last season, to mixed results. It yielded the highest whiff rate (31.9), but also the highest average exit velocity (89.0 mph).
Ruiz can dial up his fastball; he just needs to learn how to locate it. He walked more batters than he struck out, and could not seem to avoid the middle of the plate, as evidenced by its 8.2% barrel rate.
Ruiz’s slider is a bit of an enigma. With great velocity and movement, he struck out 20.4% of batters with it compared to a measly 1.9% walk rate. On the other side of that coin, a 7.3% barrel rate hints at regression on the horizon.
