An electric fastball that he locates fairly well and keeps low to reduce fly balls.

Montas throws his split-finger low and out of the zone to change up speeds while making it look like another fastball coming the hitter’s way.

Another pitch Montas keeps low and away, his slider is his premier strikeout pitch and has proven to slide right off the plate and the bat.

Montas primarily throws a hard two-seam fastball at 95.5 mph. Despite its high velocity, batters teed off on this pitch, hitting .338 with a 30.3% line-drive rate.

Montas’ slider is close to average in movement, trading a little in vertical break for added velocity. The results were good with a 14.3% swinging-strike rate, and we could see more of this pitch if Montas takes a step forward in 2019.

Of his two fastballs, this 96.3 mph four-seamer was much more effective in a smaller sample. It generated an 11.5% swinging-strike rate and allowed just a 66 wRC+. Seeing as this pitch also performed better than his two-seam fastball in 2017, it should be interesting to see if Montas reverts to this one more next season.

Only making an appearance 29 times last season after 35 showings in 2017, this changeup doesn’t look to be a significant part of Montas’ game plan.
