Pena will mix in the changeup every so often. It looks nearly identical to his fastball in movement but 10 mph slower. I am not too sure that is a good thing as it was hit around for a .962 OPS against.
Pena’s fastball has a ton of horizontal action, moving toward righties and away from lefties. Despite the movement, hitters made plenty of contact. The pitch struck out only 10% of hitters. He was a bit wild too, walking over 11%.
Pena’s only breaking pitch is an incredible slider. Every season, he has struck out over 40% of batters with it. In 2019, that continued with a 22.8% swinging strike and a 41.2% chase rate. He throws this pitch nearly as often as his fastball, which he should as it is so good.
