Hernandez threw his 60-grade curveball barely 1% of the time during his debut season. It averaged 77.3 mph and got zero whiffs.
Hernandez’s fastball averaged 95.6 mph, topping out above 99 mph. Despite just an 18.6% chase rate, it managed a 15.2% SwStr% thanks to an unreal 65.5% Z-Contact percentage on a 51.8% zone rate. The 19.3% walk rate on the pitch was a huge problem, but its 39.5% K rate meant that even a .444 BABIP only yielded a .226 average. Whether he improves his command of this pitch will determine whether we see it in high-leverage moments or not.
Hernandez’s slider averaged 82.8 mph and 2625 RPM, and earned a -2.4 pVAL in 2019 on the back of just eight hits, thanks to a .471 BABIP. Its 35.8% zone rate and 27.9% chase rate could both improve, but its results were helped by just a 54.8% Z-Swing rate, leading to a total CSW% of 27.1%.
