Barnes was quite lucky on his fastball in 2017, and it showed it was a fluke in 2018, as its BABIP rose by over 100 points. He walked more batters and struck out less as well — a bad recipe.
Barnes’ changeup took a drastic turn for the worse in 2018, as his swinging-strike rate was cut in half, and it couldn’t as effectively get batters out. Hitters stopped chasing it, which could be due to the fact that he lost drop on it.
Barnes’ slider was hit quite hard, as it didn’t get a lot of horizontal movement. That allowed batters to lift it into the air, proved by a 40.0 FB% and 16.7% HR/FB.
