Dan’s fastball comes in at an impressive 96.6 mph on average and shows above average rise and tail on it. It often proved difficult for him to tame though, as he finished 2019 with just a 8/6 K/BB ratio with it but still held hitters to a .264 wOBA against it. Overall it generates a 7.2% SwStr and had the unusual characteristic of being more hittable out of the zone (93% O-Contact) than in the zone (83.8% Z-Contact), which seems unlikely to be repeated.

Primarily employed running out of the zone (34.2% Zone) while ahead in the count against RHB, Altavilla’s slider was responsible for 10 of his 18 strikeouts in 2019. With below average depth but excellent gloveside run, the pitch gets a good number of chases (38.7%) and an excellent whiff rate (20.2%), holding hitters from both sides to a .271 wOBA.

Altavilla did a nice job of attacking hitters up in the zone with his 96 mph heat last season, generating a wicked 46.2% infield fly rate and a nice .167 opponents average. Better control is the key for the young power arm, as his 23.4% walk rate indicates.

Altavilla throws a hard, tight slider that can reach 90 miles per hour. He had more success in 2017 than he did last year, when he struggled with location and saw his swinging-strike rate drop three percentage points, leading to a 0.5 pVal. There’s potential in this pitch though.
