Bettis uses his change as often as his fastball getting nearly a 15% swinging strike rate while getting batters to swing out of the zone over 40% of the time. He generated nearly 70% grounders with this pitch but can still let up the occasional home run if the hitter puts the ball in the air.
Bettis’ 77 mph curve was a solid pitch that did not end many at bats. He struck out over 20% but ended up allowing three dingers in the 14 plate appearances despite throwing the pitch over 100 times. Batters spat on the pitch too many times only swinging 30% of the time (down from 40% in 2018 and 50% in 2017)
Bettis took a step back as a starter moving into a reliever role. He gained a couple of miles per hour on the fastball, cut his fly-ball rate by ten percentage points and gained more control on the pitch.
Bettis struggled with the slider ending in far too many hits and not missing enough bats. Luckily the balls in play only resulted in singles mostly. He did struggle with control on the pitch walking over 10% of hitters while also striking out about the same percentage.
Bettis has never missed many bats with his four-seamer, but his chase rate tumbled seven percentage points from the previous two seasons, and opponents trashed the pitch for a -8.5 pVal. That probably had something to do with his inflated walk rate, as it rose from 9.1% over the three previous seasons to 12.3%. His velocity was also still down two ticks from 2016, and he lost significant ride on it last year to boot.
His changeup gets an impressive amount of drop, and while its swinging-strike rate was an uninspiring 12.3%, he did get an excellent 39.5% chase rate. And batters pounded it into the ground 62.3% of the time, making it a go-to way to get outs.
The slider is as average as they come shape-wise, and it had terrible swinging-strike (9.5%) and chase rates (27.5%) for a breaking pitch. Still, he pounded the zone with it 50.3% of the time, making it a clear secondary strike-getter.
Bettis’ hook gets less bend than typical but above-average drop. Still, it didn’t function as a particularly effective whiff-inducer, as it carried subpar 13.7% swinging-strike and 31.0% chase rates.
