A wild changeup appears! Bedrosian reintroduced the pitch (recognized by Baseball Savant as a splitter) into his arsenal in 2019 after relying solely on a fastball/slider mix for the past three seasons. Despite achieving a robust 23.1% swinging-strike rate on just 13 pitches, the peripheral third pitch sported a 25% walk rate without registering a single punchout.

A little snakebitten by the long ball in 2018 (19.2% HR/FB rate), Bedrosian’s four-seamer suppressed home runs at a much more manageable 7.1% HR/FB rate in 2019. Small gains in swinging-strike rate (up nearly 3%) and chase rate (up about 4%) helped lift Bedrosian’s pVAL to 2.6 after floundering to -3.0 in 2018.

Bedrosian’s slider is the haymaker of his one-two fastball-slider punch. A 17.1% swinging-strike rate, 41.9% zone rate, and 42.1% chase rate cements Money Pitch status for the reliever’s primary option.

His four-seamer withered on the vine in 2018, as hitters swung less, made contact 90% of the time, whiffed less and barely chased it. It suffered from an inflated 19.2% HR/FB rate, but, curiously, it also became painfully straight.

Bedrosian’s slider can be straight-up fun to watch, especially when he drops it inside to lefties like he did here. And while its swing and chase rates fell a bit last year, it carried an impressive 7.1 pVal and held opponents to a .073 ISO and 9.1% HR/FB rate.
