Brendan McKay’s changeup is very firm at 86 mph, 7 mph off his fastball, with slight arm-side run. He didn’t throw many in 2019 (under 4% usage), but he got quite a few whiffs on the ones he did throw (36.4%). He used the change solely against righties and worked away.
One of the curveballs with the lowest spin rates in baseball, McKay used this pitch as his most popular secondary to mixed results. It was a tad unlucky with a .362 BABIP, 20.8% fly-ball rate and 20% HR/FB so with a touch more luck this pitch should see better results in 2020.
McKay’s fastball, thrown 56% of the time, sits just under 94 mph with slightly above-average ride and arm-side run. He likes to work it up in the zone and managed a 23.4% whiff rate in 2019. He attacks righties on the outside, bumping the whiffs to 34.1% when outside of the zone.
McKay liked to use his cutter in on righties and try and get them to saw off. Unfortunately he tended to leave it over the plate a little too much and resulted in a .346 wOBA against.
