Though he only threw 39 of them at the major league level in 2018, Shipley’s four-seamer looked solid, topping out at 96 mph while flashing above-average arm-side run and average rise. Of the 10 balls put in play against it, just one sneaked through for a single.
Shipley’s curveball featured good drop but below-average horizontal movement in its brief 2018 appearance. Hitters only chased it out of the zone about a quarter of the time.
The changeup has customarily been Shipley’s least-used offering, and 2018 was no different. The pitch did have the highest whiff rate of all his pitches at 16.7%, though it was only thrown 18 times.
