Lively’s curveball has always been a decent pitch, with a 26.3% K rate in 2018 an exponential improvement on a 11.1% number from 2017. Still, the movement numbers on the pitch are low for its type.
Lively isn’t a high-velocity pitcher, and a 92.8 average velo on the fastball in 2019 suggests that he simply might not have it in him.
The fastball did no favors for Lively, allowing a .380 wOBA. It caused lots of issues as his main offering.
Lively used his curveball as a strike-zone pitch, throwing it there nearly 50% of the time. It’s lack of whiffs (only 8.5% of the time) prevented it from being a plus breaking ball.
Lively’s two-seam fastball sample was quite small this past season, but it was a liability in 2017. The pitch allowed a .409 wOBA that season.
Lively threw only 67 sliders in 2018. It suffered from a bit of a BABIP problem, allowing a .571 BABIP. It did show some whiff ability, recording a 17.9% swinging-strike rate.
