Gomber pounded the zone with his fastball, throwing it for a strike nearly 60% of the time. That had some hard-contact consequences, as the pitch allowed a .370 wOBA.
The curveball gave little to Gomber in terms of the whiffs or chases that you would like to see from a breaking pitch. It did, however, manage contact very well. It limited opposing hitters to just a .314 slugging percentage.
Gomber’s slider looks solid by plate discipline metrics as he both established it in the zone (43.8% zone rate) and forced some swings and misses (14.6%) whiff rate. The pitch does not particularly stand out, but it performed well enough to be a viable option in his repertoire.
The sample size on Gomber’s changeup is small, but it was knocked around in 2018 to a .395 wOBA. It posted a respectable 14.3% whiff rate, but that was not enough to overcome the damage.
