Minter throws his fastball in almost direct combination with his cutter, but he’s been unable to duplicate the results of his other offering. Sitting at around 96 mph, Minter’s fastball is effective in certain regards but creates a swinging strike just 9.6% of the time and is a big reason why Minter’s BB/9 spiked to 3.23 as his SO/9 regressed to 10.13.
Minter’s cutter is also his bread and butter, sawing off right-handed hitters while limiting opponents overall to a .066 ISO and a career 40.5% ground-ball rate. During his age-24 season, Minter added almost two miles per hour of average velocity to the pitch, which now sits around 91.7 mph.
Minter flirted with a changeup late in 2018 in an effort to add a third pitch to his repertoire. The pitch proved effective in limited use, generating just a .111 BAA. With a 42% O-swing rate and 12.5% swinging-strike rate, look to see more of Minter’s changeup as a possible putaway pitch in 2019.
