The most effective pitch in Alzolay’s repertoire in his limited action in 2019, the changeup comes in at 85.1 mph and is in the zone 32% of the time. With below average drop and armside run, it nonetheless held opponents to a .080 wOBA with a .211 xwOBA and was effective in 2-strike situations, racking up 4 K’s in the 15 times thrown.
Alzolay’s breaking ball shows more sweeping action with below average drop, causing most of the batted balls to go in the air (22% GB) and averages 79.7 mph. As with all his pitches in 2019, location was an issue for Alzolay (36.7% Zone), though he did generate decent chase rates (34.4%) and whiff (14.3%) rates.
Showing good velocity (94.3 mph) and average tail and rise, Alozolay’s fastball shows potential but was not particularly effective in 2019. With a 85% contact rate, it does not consistently miss bats and a .808 SLG allowed would suggest hitters are able to square it up.
