MLB News & Moments You Should Know – 4/23/23

An MLB record, a 3-homer day, and a rookie who's raking.

Stay updated on everything baseball with our morning MLB News & Moments articles. We’ve got you covered to keep you in the know.

Today’s Headlines

The Tampa Bay Rays have homered in each of their first 21 games, setting an MLB record.

Randy Arozarena did the honors on Saturday, hitting a two-run homer off White Sox starter Dylan Cease in the first inning. Arozarena also walked it off for the Rays in the 10th inning, driving in Vidal Bruján for the winning run.

Shane McClanahan also had a strong outing for Tampa Bay, striking out 10 batters over six innings and generating 32 whiffs! According to Sarah Langs, that’s the most swing-and-misses in an outing of 90 or fewer pitches in the pitch-tracking era.

Adolis García hits three home runs en route to an 18-3 Rangers win.

Adolis García had himself a night, hitting three home runs and two doubles as the Rangers cruised to an 18-3 victory over the Oakland A’s. In addition to a 5-for-5 night, he also had 8 RBI and helped lead the Rangers to their 13th win in 2023.

On Saturday, García became the first player in American League history with 3 HR and 2 2B in a game and also just the 14th player since 1901 with 5 extra-base hits in a game.

Have yourself a day, James Outman!

Los Angeles Dodgers‘ rookie James Outman is raking. He went 4-for-5 on Saturday with two home runs and four runs batted in. He’s improved his slash line to .314/.407/.735 on the season. Additionally, his seven home runs in March and April are the most ever by a Dodger rookie. His teammates approve, too. Just look at Max Muncy giddily clapping along on the bench!

Best Moments From Yesterday

DJ LeMahieu needs new batting gloves.

I know baseball players are superstitious, but DJ LeMahieu seems to be taking it to another level. He delivered a pinch-hit, RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to walk it off for the Yankees on Saturday.

Cameras caught him high-fiving teammates with batting gloves that were more hole than glove, so I can only assume they’re more of a good luck charm than anything else. Also, @Cut4’s shade in the alt text is too good not to mention.

Alek Manoah is petty and I’m here for it.

Alek Manoah hasn’t been shy about his dislike for Gerrit Cole, and he also must remember that Cole doesn’t like when things don’t run on schedule. With everyone on the field and ready to begin the game, Manoah sauntered in from the bullpen and made a statement entrance.

His performance on the mound also spoke for itself. Manoah tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits, one walk, and striking out five.

This KBO fan really wanted that foul ball.

This dad was doing all he could to get that foul ball for his daughter, including getting creative with chopsticks and enlisting a fellow fan to gnaw at the net. Dads will do whatever it takes to put a smile on their kids’ faces. I really hope he got it!

It’s a party at the Trop!

The Tampa Bay Rays are undefeated at home and everyone’s feeling it. Soak it in, Rays fans!

Injuries & Transactions

SPs Corbin Burnes (pec) and Jacob deGrom (wrist) are both good to go for their starts today.

SP Sandy Alcantara was scratched Saturday with biceps tendinitis, but should be ready to start in Atlanta this week.

1B Yandy Díaz left Saturday’s game due to dehydration.

OF Kris Bryant is day-to-day with a SI joint/glute injury.
