MLB News and Moments You Should Know — July 27

Tuesday continued the trade rumors swirling, and us all invested.

Today’s Headlines

Carlos Rodón Doesn’t Care About His Teammates

Kidding, of course. But the San Francisco Giants pitcher was not happy with himself after giving up five runs over six innings to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Rodón couldn’t stop the Giants’ losing streak, as it reached six games yesterday. What’s worse, Thairo Estrada may now be hesitant to hang out with Rodón in the dugout, as he fell victim to Rodón’s rage.

Shohei Ohtani…New York…Met?

Rumors swirled yesterday when news outlets reported the Mets checked in on the Angels’ superstar, Shohei Ohtani. While it is the season for rumors and check-ins, this is always an exciting time for baseball fans to get excited. I doubt the Angels move on from Ohtani in a trade, but Mets GM may be keeping his finger on the pulse for when and if Ohtani becomes a free agent at the end of next season. Billy Eppler developed a great rapport with Ohtani and recruited him to join the Angels back in 2017 when Eppler was the GM of Los Angeles. Now, could he work that same mojo to bring Ohtani to the other coast?

Best Moments From Yesterday

The Phenom Returns

Julio Rodríguez returned to the Mariners’ lineup yesterday and belted his 17th homer of the season in his return.

Honoring Jackie Robinson

After her 100th birthday last week, Rachel Robinson was in New York City Tuesday to cut the ribbon to the Jackie Robinson museum set to open on September 5.

The Mets won the Kelenic Trade

That’s right, I said it. While everyone loves to bash the New York Mets for trading away their top prospect at the time, Jarred Kelenic, most forget they got Edwin Díaz in that trade, who has proven more valuable than either Kelenic or Canó. Díaz is having a historic season, and it continued last night when he dominated the Yankees’ slugging lineup.

Per Buster Olney, Díaz is on pace for the highest K rate in a season at 66%. That is remarkable. The strikeouts have been automatic, and are helping to avoid trouble. And sure, Kelenic may blossom, he’s still just 22 years old, but Díaz has been the key difference in the Mets bullpen this year and that’s worth a lot. To boot, Díaz also enters the game with the best intro in MLB. See for yourself.

Injuries

Garrett Cooper was placed on the 10-day Injured List.

Giancarlo Stanton was placed on the 10-day Injured List on Tuesday with left Achilles tendonitis.
