Because the Dodgers like to mess with everything and make me super frustrated, Kenta Maeda was removed from the pen to enter the rotation once again, where he went 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 Hits, 1 BBs, 5 Ks. I wasn’t suggesting Maeda here since I didn’t expect more than five innings, lowering the chance for him to be productive as others. Welp, he made the most of it and now I’m sure everyone is freaking out about him again. Ehhhh, I really don’t like investing in Maeda. If he’s out there and you have a spot to fill, sure go ahead. Otherwise, I hate his 5.7 IPS (just two starts of 11 above 5.0 IP!), which means you’re getting about 5 Ks per start and opening the door for a bad WHIP or ERA with a smaller sample size. It just doesn’t add up to someone I want often, especially if you’re in a QS league.
Let’s see how every other SP did yesterday:
Jimmy Nelson – 9.0 IP, 0 ER, 6 Hits, 2 BBs, 10 Ks. I hope y’all did give up after his last start that was pretty mediocre. I’m all on the Nelson train and I hope you are too.
Jacob deGrom – 8.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 Hits, 2 BBs, 6 Ks. NOW THIS IS WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT. Even better is the longball he hit + the fact this was against the Nationals. I’m fine with the lower K count for now as long as the walks are down and there’s that beautiful goose egg. Please please please be good to go now. Please.
Jacob Faria – 7.0 IP, 1 ER, 6 Hits, 1 BBs, 9 Ks. So Faria’s Slider is getting better each game as it completely messed up the Tigers yesterday. I still worry about his command and blegh Fastball but that Slider will make him a genuine strikeout threat each game, making him a premier Spice Girl in the short term. To the 40s you go!
Trevor Bauer – 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 Hits, 2 BBs, 8 Ks. This is what Bauer does. He’ll be so worthless and hurt your team one start, then show up with 8 Ks the next. A quintessential Cherry Bomb.
John Lackey – 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 Hits, 3 BBs, 4 Ks. Okay…I’m happy you can take advantage of the Pirates, but I’m still not sold yet. Let’s see how you do against the Marlins on Friday.
Ubaldo Jimenez – 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 Hits, 4 BBs, 3 Ks. Whoaaa, Ubaldo was helpful for a day! Sure sure, it came with three strikeouts but this is good! Hope it was a great Father’s Day Birthday Party.
Jose Urena – 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 Hits, 2 BBs, 4 Ks. If you’re depending on Jose, Urena lot of trouble. That 4.04 ERA is backed by a 5.42 FIP, 5.67 xFIP, 6.06 K/9, 3.86 BB/9…so don’t do this.
J.A. Happ – 6.2 IP, 3 ER, 8 Hits, 0 BBs, 9 Ks. This is hilarious. I thought we were over the ridiculous K/BB numbers? I think you have to roll with Happ as a Toby that somehow has great K upside suddenly.
Tyler Chatwood – 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 Hits, 4 BBs, 5 Ks. So Chatwood can be okay in Coors if he faces a super weak team…maybe? Thanks for the solid two-start week, you can drop him now as he heads to the Dodgers, Arizona, then at home against the Reds.
Jharel Cotton – 6.1 IP, 3 ER, 6 Hits, 1 BBs, 6 Ks. Hmmmm, the Yankees just got swept in O.Co, which makes me think it wasn’t the toughest lineup Cotton has faced, but to see a 6:1 K per BB is solid. I’m not sold yet that he’s upgrades from his PEAS status, but I’m intrigued.
Christian Bergman – 5.2 IP, 2 ER, 4 Hits, 2 BBs, 1 Ks. Just don’t. Please don’t.
Mike Foltynewicz – 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 7 Hits, 2 BBs, 4 Ks. It’s weird to be okay with a Folty start with just four strikeouts. I’m still calling him a PEAS as he just won’t get to a point that he produces consistently enough to be happy with him on your squad.
Ty Blach – 6.2 IP, 3 ER, 7 Hits, 2 BBs, 5 Ks. Blach survived Coors because Blach does whatever he wants on a given night and won’t give us owners the chance to predict which side of the coin will land on a given night. Him and Junis should hang out a lot. I still don’t get this joke. Junis reminds me of Janus. And? The two-faced God. And? Harvey Dent = Two-Face. And? Seriously? AND?! Two-Face flips a coin to make his decisions. And? OH COME ON.
Luis Perdomo – 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 8 Hits, 2 BBs, 4 Ks. These kind of starts are kinda what I’m thinking for Perdomo. His super high groundball rate will allow him to go deeper into games with fewer homeruns and more double plays. Still a decently high WHIP since the higher BABIP with grounders, but it’s a give-and-take. A borderline Toby…? Not sure if I’m sold yet there.
Ben Lively – 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 8 Hits, 1 BBs, 6 Ks. Raggedy Ann has thrown four straight Quality Starts to begin his career. Do I think his 3.33 ERA will stick with his 5.74 xFIP and 3.67 K/9? Well? That was rhetorical. Oh…so…no? NO.
Jason Vargas – 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 8 Hits, 2 BBs, 3 Ks. It’s a PQS for Vargas and we’re cool with that. Yeah you want better against the Halos but whatever.
Kyle Gibson – 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 8 Hits, 3 BBs, 4 Ks. You want to avoid Gibson completely, especially if you have back problems. Please tell you like guitar jokes.
James Shields – 5.2 IP, 3 ER, 7 Hits, 1 BBs, 3 Ks. Welcome back from the DL, we’ve missed you so much.
Joe Ross – 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 9 Hits, 1 BBs, 4 Ks. Is this good? It’s a 3.00 ERA but a 1.67 WHIP and just four Ks. Raise your hand if you think Ross is a giant headache…I realize now how this doesn’t really work. I’m assuming a lot of you have your hands raised. I’d be surprised if Ross showed a good amount of consistency for a while.
Joe Musgrove – 5.2 IP, 5 ER, 6 Hits, 2 BBs, 7 Ks. Musgrove had a tough matchup against the Red Sawx. Hard to really expect much better and at least there with seven Ks, right?
Luis Cessa – 4.0 IP, 4 ER, 5 Hits, 1 BBs, 4 Ks. I was a bit disappointed to see Cessa get the ball instead of more exciting options like Chad Green or Chance Adams, as he will be boring like this a lot. There may be a really good start in him but good luck seeking that game out.
David Price – 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 8 Hits, 3 BBs, 3 Ks. Duuuude, I need you to get in your groove already, I know this was the Astros, but we’re five games in and the clock is ticking. You’re even had a .234 BABIP (sure, 20% HR/FB rate) so don’t act like this is just bad luck. *Cough* 6.49 FIP *Cough*. I’d consider buying low as he gets the Angels + Twins + Rangers + Rays next and if he’s ever going to figure it out, it’s during this stretch.
Robbie Ray – 5.1 IP, 4 ER, 8 Hits, 4 BBs, 7 Ks. Well well well. I was expecting Ray to slow down a bit later on when he stopped getting easy matchups, especially the Phillies away from Coors Lite, but here we are. He’s going to get the Phillies again next week and I was thinking he’d be a sell-high now after a good start but it might be a situation that you need one more solid outing before you can get what you need. Or someone will buy thinking he’s at a discount now. Either way, see what’s out there because Ray will have more starts like these.
Jameson Taillon – 5.0 IP, 4 ER, 8 Hits, 1 BBs, 4 Ks. Bleegggghhh. You’re better than this Taillon, you know it, your parents know it, the other team knows it, your barber knows it, WE ALL KNOW IT. So do it, kiddo. Okay, he’s still just three starts removed…so I’ll give him some slack here.
Yu Darvish – 5.0 IP, 5 ER, 8 Hits, 1 BBs, 6 Ks. But he only had one walk! So that’s a 4.45 ERA with 34.9% hard contact, 4.61 FIP and 4.47 xFIP across his last five starts…with a 6.2 IPS and 9.20 K/9. Even when it’s bad, at least you get 6 Ks per start.
JC Ramirez – 3.0 IP, 5 ER, 5 Hits, 4 BBs, 6 Ks. FINE. I guess we’re done with JC if he can’t handle the Royals. THANKS FOR NOTHING. Streamer Record 37-25-10.
Bronson Arroyo – 3.0 IP, 5 ER, 7 Hits, 0 BBs, 3 Ks. The GQSB 2.0 is so boring this year and now it might come to a default end as Arroyo is wondering if this start is the end of his career. I miss the old days of Harang vs Buehrle. Oh 2014…
Lance Lynn – 4.2 IP, 7 ER, 9 Hits, 2 BBs, 5 Ks. We knew this day would come given how far his ERA was miles ahead his FIP/xFIP and his walk rate was sitting near 3.50 BB/9. Still, I think he’s better than your standard TEEs and instead a Toby with Jake Odorizzi n all.
Buck Farmer – 2.1 IP, 7 ER, 5 Hits, 1 BBs, 2 Ks. This Spice Girl had a hot start but has started his process of fading from the public eye. Oh Barmer, I’m sad how relevant your nickname is today.

I wouldn’t worry about it, they’ll produce or not independently of their teammates in the rotation.
Bauer, Ross, Newcomb are all pretty even at this point, with Ross having the highest shot of becoming stable…though I am a little worried after his first start.

I am not buying Faria as more than a streamer. His FB is garbage. I watched a bit of his last start and he seemed more lucky than good.
