Welcome to this week’s Injury Report! This week was a bloodbath. Since we haven’t had any players with season-ending injuries this year, I wanted to give a brief reminder of how I operate. I want to talk about the injury itself and give my opinion on how I will view the player going into 2022 and beyond. Redraft leagues won’t get as much out of that explanation, but I hope this will help those in keeper/dynasty leagues.
Dustin May – UCL Tear
The Dodgers announced Monday that Dustin May would undergo Tommy John surgery on May 11. The typical timeline for Tommy John is 12-16 months before the player makes their return, so we are looking around All-Star Break 2022. Long term, I’m not expecting much out of May in 2022. In 2023 and beyond, he should be able to return to form and be a fantasy contributor.
Return Date: Mid-2022
Buy/Sell/Hold: Hold (Dynasty/Keeper leagues)
Luis Robert – Torn Hip Flexor
Luis Robert will be out of baseball activities for the next 12-16 weeks. We are looking at August at the absolute earliest for a possible return. I think he will be out until September and could easily be out for the rest of the year. A lot will depend on updates from the White Sox about whether Robert can return this year. Looking at 2022 and beyond, I’m not too worried about this impacting his performance and fantasy outlook.
Return Date: September
Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy (Dynasty/Keeper leagues)
Omar Narváez – Hamstring Strain
Omar Narváez will be out with a hamstring strain. The Brewers haven’t announced the severity of the injury, but I think it’s a mild strain. He shouldn’t be out for too long and should be fine once he returns.
Return Date: Early June
Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy
Jazz Chisholm – Hamstring Strain
Much like Narváez, Jazz Chisholm will be out with a hamstring strain. I also think Chisholm will be out until June.
Return Date: Early June
Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy
Jordan Hicks – Right Arm Tightness
I’m expecting Jordan Hicks to land on the IL soon. There’s been no official word on the severity or details of his injury. All we know is that he is dealing with right elbow inflammation. Normally, alarm bells go off when I hear elbow tightness/inflammation, but after a player returns from Tommy John, it doesn’t bother me. Elbow inflammation is typical and should resolve with rest. I don’t expect Hicks to be out for an extended period of time.
Return Date: Late May
Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy
Ketel Marte – Hamstring Strain
We finally have a Ketel Marte update. He has resumed baseball activities and is moving closer to a return. With that being said, I’m still sticking with my early/mid-June timeline.
Return Date: Early/Mid June
Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy
